22/2/2021 20:40 | Economy set to recover from £250bn Covid hit by ChristmasRecovery roadmap to 'take shackles off' economy with lifting of all restrictions by June 21 triggering rapid rebound, say economistsByRussell Lynch, ECONOMICS EDITOR22 February 2021 6:35pmThe British economy could roar back to its pre-Covid level by the end of the year after Boris Johnson "released the shackles" on consumers and businesses with his roadmap out of lockdown.Growth will surge as restrictions are gradually eased and households race to spend savings built up during months of mass closures, according to Capital Economics.By the end of the year, its analysts expect GDP to have regained levels reached before the pandemic struck - meaning the country will have clawed back more than £250bn of output lost to Covid in one of the sharpest recoveries in history.Fellow consultant Oxford Economics expects the UK to be among the world's fastest-growing advanced economies this year following its blistering vaccine rollout and the decision to lift all restrictions by late June.Martin Beck, chief UK economist at Oxford, said: "The shackles are coming off the UK economy. We spend more on services like leisure and hospitality and less on food and energy on fuel than the Europeans."It is these services that were most exposed to lockdowns, which will be a relative advantage this year and become a tailwind rather than a headwind. Now we know there is an end date that will be good for confidence. More staycations this year will also be good for domestic growth."The unveiling of the plan follows predictions from Bank of England chief economist Andy Haldane that the UK could bounce back like a "coiled spring", fuelled by an estimated £125bn in household savings built up in the past year. The blow of the third lockdown is likely to leave the economy about 12pc below its peak, Capital Economics said. But it expects a staggered reopening to lift output back to 2pc below its pre-Covid level by July, with all lost ground regained by the end of 2021.... Full article.... Daily Telegraph | xxxxxy

22/2/2021 15:02 | diku "as for furniture has anybody bought any furniture from MKS with those prices...are they of any" I have bought food, bedding, some clothes in MARKS in the past but not furniture neither shoes. Furniture can be so specialised just like electricals are and there are companies out there who specialise in both groups. Marks furniture like its beds are limited and even far more limited than John Lewis. I have no doubt some of their furniture will be reasonable quality but I wouldnt buy furniture from MARKS myself. However I have to say neither do I like DFS and the other Superstores selling furniture they manufactire their own furnitue for a price. I actually miss Multiyork who used to sell good quality furniture but must admit I never bough anything myslef. MARKS needs to reinvent itself its made a start but has a long way to go. | debsdowner
22/2/2021 14:54 | Sainsburys has been critiscised for "rasing prices to match ALDI" which as laughbale as it onl means a small number of products but it just shows how difficult it is to try and compete fairly. It actually impossible to price match completely and perfectly as both ALDI and LID have so many own brand labels. Where price match by both Tesco and Sainsburys have difficults is persuading their loyal customers to leave as the big boy tend to cut their prices then put them back up later on. I for one am sceptical of the price match campaigns and I do shop in both ALDI and LIDL and most of the UK public do so according to various polls. | debsdowner

22/2/2021 14:44 | Breaking news: MARKS CEO Steven Rowe warns of further job losses in the retail sector The blanket comments are clearly alluded towards the whole retail sector but do suggest to me could mean more job losses in MARKS as well. I find it hard to contemplate that with all the store closures MARKS will not be immune to more store closures when John Lewis has had a second round of store closures. However I have mixed vews on this topic with MARKS as many customers still prefer to shop instore and if MARKS are one of the last men on the High Street they could in fact gain from others demise. There is no doubt about it many people like myself like to see the product face to face and in relation to fashion feel the quality. But at the same time website improvement means there are few products need to be seen and touched. One doesnt really need to feel a washing machine before its purchased and to some extent other white goods products. One has also to bear in mind a considerbale amount of people dont mind sendign a product back such as fashion if they are dissatisfired with a product and there isn't much difference in the time wasted doing that than trawling round the shops. The High Street will never be the same again after lockdown in some areas half the shops will be gone maybe 75% or so in some areas. It was bad enough seeing out of Town shopping parades now the towns are losing far more. | debsdowner
