I did warn avoid retail John Lewis done the best but profits will be significantly down. JL say competition will increase more volatility. House of Fraser sales down 2.9% looks bleak.

Steve Rowe added: "We continue with the accelerated transformation programme we outlined in November and have recently taken several important steps to reshape the business for the future. These include a new technology partnership and organisation, and the sale of our Hong Kong based business in line with the streamlined franchise-led model we are adopting for International."

We will report our Full Year results on 23 May 2018.

I look forward to seeing the Full Year results.

One word to describe an M&S Christmas...lackluster
Not that great. If this carries on, M&S will need to be taken over. How many times have we heard about never ending restructuring i'm disappointed but will continue to add on any weakness if only for divi.

M&S poaches Dixons Carphone finance chief Humphrey Singer

The announcement comes less than 24 hours before the retailer updates the City on its Christmas trading performance.

Marks & Spencer has poached a top executive at Dixons Carphone to become its new finance chief.

The appointment of Humphrey Singer, first reported by Sky News, was announced less than 24 hours before M&S updates the City on its Christmas trading performance.

Mr Singer, who has been with Dixons since 2007, served as group finance director of Dixons Carphone since the company was created in a merger with Carphone Warehouse in 2014.

He will replace Helen Weir, who is due to leave M&S on 31 March.

M&S chief executive Steve Rowe said: "Humphrey will be a great addition to the top team.

"His experience as part of the team that led Dixons through its period of change and migration to multi-channel retailer is most relevant to what we are undertaking here."

Morning All,

Many thanks for the posting the news links phil.

As for the 'Modest fashion' range M&S are selling, if those that complained about using the word 'Modest', had first typed into google 'Modest fashion' they would have realized it's now a very popular term used by many companies here and in other countries.

Wikipedia has a large piece on the meaning of 'Modest fashion' and explains a lot of misconceptions surrounding modest fashion or modest style:

"The term modest fashion refers to fashion trend of wearing less skin revealing clothes. The exact interpretation of 'modest' varies across cultures and countries. There is no unambiguous interpretation as it is influenced by socio-cultural characterizations of each country. Beyond the various interpretations, all agree on the idea that modest fashion means loose clothing, comfortable dressing and covering of the body according to person's own comfort..."
"Modest fashion came to limelight thanks to many fashionistas like Dina Tokio and websites like Unique Hijabs, Haute Hijab, MODESTyle, etc."

MKS is correct in saying there is a growing demand for the Modest Fashion style.

'M&S starts selling ‘modest’ clothing for women and people aren’t happy about it'

They’ve decided to finally include a range of ‘modest’ clothing to cater for women who need ‘flowing fabrics, higher necklines and lower hems’ for whatever reason. They’re not the first high street brand to offer such – Mango and Zara have already boarded the Ramadan fashion train.

Yeah, but what about MKS's numbers. Only yesterday it was put out by 3 independent retail analysts that their Xmas period trading was going to be poor with the share price reacting badly. Then today they move up sharply. Confused to say the least, although I'm expecting a scenario more similar to Debenhams when the facts are revealed.

'Torrid' year for traditional retail

According to Visa, its cards account for £1 in every £3 spent in the UK.

With that information it creates an index of spending for every month, and December's report showed household spending falling 1% annually.

Last year consumer spending declined for the first time in five years, according to Visa.

“Despite some large retailers signalling a strong Christmas performance, it is clear that the High Street has suffered recently, while online spending has held up," said Mark Antipof, chief commercial officer at Visa.

He described last year as "torrid" for traditional, face-to-face retailing.
