05/1/2010 11:07 | extracted from latest report Next and John Lewis, a department store operator, are the first of the U.K.'s big retailers to report Christmas trading results, and the results point to a strong result for the sector as a whole. However, both warned that the outlook for 2010 is still tough due to the ongoing economic downturn and because the U.K. sales tax, or value added tax, is reverting to 17.5%, from 15%. Next, which considers Marks & Spencer Group PLC (MKS.LN) among its main competitors, said it now expects full-year pretax profit to be between GBP490 million and GBP500 million, well above market consensus of GBP475 million according to data from FactSet and above the GBP429 million profit the company reported last year. It cited solid sales, tight control on stocks and a GBP7 million boost because this financial year will be 53 weeks long compared with 52 weeks last year. It also increased its earnings per share guidance to 180 pence and 184 pence, up at least 15% on last year | 5jacko | |
