"Frasers group rolls out buy now pay later app" is interesting in reference to N Brown Group (BWNG) in which Frasers has recently taken a stake. BWNG has a significant credit arm in addition to the online business.

Markets were reacting badly in the US last night and in all European markets today so not UK specific.
Nerves in the US ahead of FED decision this week. 0.5% by FED may result in a sharp sell off and a change in sentiment. 0.25% and the rally should continue. ECB and BoE expected to raise interest rates by 0.5% this week

IMF has a terrible forecasting record.

The IMF gives a bleak forecast of the UK economy today stating that the UK will be the only developed economy to shrink this year and even Russia will perform better than the UK with all the sanctions against the state

Analysts can be wrong of course bear in mind but the market seems to be reacting badly to the forecast.

STRIKES just about everywhere now and bound to affect the economy and consumer spend will be hit. Market taking a pounding today and at the moment the GOV doesn't look like they will give in to union demands.

If they do give in to unions inflation will further damage the economy and you get a vicious cycle difficult to break.

JD Sports hit by Cyber attack and customaers data leaked

Cyber attacks are a worrying development for any retailer and retailers will have to try and tighten up their security and data, if a company is hit and customers data leaked customers will be more reluctant to shop at the company in future.

I think wholesale is an big issue because they are only just starting to address it and the time frame they have given for a turnaround is 12-24 months.
Agree that UK retail and ecommerce are more important in showing that they are going in the right direction.
They said in webcast that margin had dropped because:
1. In wholesale they had tried to move stock.
2. Clearing older lines through Black Friday and post Christmas sale.
3. High sales in third party ecommerce are lower margins than their own shops and their own ecommerce.
Acknowledged they need to realign cost base to match the new reality of less sales through own stores where the margins are highest.
I can see why they went for a high interest "covenant light" loan.

BooHoo. I'm concerned about cash burn this year and negative effect it may have on share price. Will gather my thoughts and post on Boo thread.
Thanks for the China information.

Wholesale down is not such a big issue. Would be worse if it was the other way round (store sales down by that much). Wholesale can sometimes lag. I didn't like the fact that margin % dropped by the amount that it did (despite wholesale dropping in the mix). I'm wondering if wholesale had made up for a larger part of the mix (ie normal, had it not dropped by much) would the margin % on total revs have been even lower?

Superdry 9 week Christmas sales were excellent.
Stores +18.8%
Ecommerce +33.4%

The problem was:

Wholesale* -57.4%

SDRY said wholesale was down in H1 by 5.2% on 22nd December and "low levels of dispatches in October which are expected to partially reverse in the second half."

HOW -5.2% "partially reverse in the second half" turns into -57.4% five weeks later is beyond belief.

I believe SDRY are a recovery stock but the next year may be difficult on the share price unless wider markets rally.
Sold for a small profit in anticipation of a lower entry point.

An interesting development in Sainburys, Bestway cosco owner takes a 3.4% stake in the company and says it is not interested in a takeowner at the moment but may consider buying more shares from time to time. The stake could enhance Sainsburys share price however in the hope that Bestway will change their mind and do make an offer for the company..

First Department store Charity shop opens in London

Even MARKS is aware of customers concerns over sustainablity together with the cost of living crisis entering the pre-worn themselves. This may not affect MARKS customers too much apart from a slowdown in growth in respect of all fashion.

The yoounger generation shopping pre-worn themselves and they are also the next generation which will be middle aged themselves one day and will be less inclined to buy new.

EE Morrisons taken on too much debt and the result is they have been forced to keep prices up.

darrin, ASDA is trying to cut costs and I agree filling shelves in the daytime takes longer and boxes and trolleys all over the place prevents you shopping.

This is the problems wheb they try and find ways of cutting costs sometimes they get it wrong and cannot see the obvious.

But saying that it's so obvious it causes more problems you cannot understand their logic.

It may save 10%-20% on wages but take longer to do, I suppose they have some rational for their doing this, I suppose it is to make the staff work harder, TESCO have done the same so they are not on their own and both ALDI and LIDL fill shelves during the day as well as before the shops open.

debs, Morrisons are not as price competitive as when a listed company and market share loss is the result.

Marks imv winning share from Waitrose on food. The other half won't go to Waitrose shops in my area any more, they look tired and old - shopping experience not great because of this. Guildford store is decent but not on my doorstep.

diku not really sure presumably they have a list of retailers who provide limited info to CBI.

On other news ASDA to cut costs by moving night time shelf stackers to daytime which would mean a pay cut. I can recall TESCO doing the same thing a while ago but staff will not be happy.
