bionicdog, I have an offer from Threshers for 6 for £24 for any of the Casillero del Diablo range, so would be grateful for your thoughts on the SB once you've sobered up ;-)

Slightly OT, borrowed from jibba_jabba:

I found some Andrew Peace family reserve shiraz cabernet lurking in the 3 for a tenner section in Asda. It's 8 quid in Somerfield and other places. Trouble is that it's 14% and at that price you feel obliged to try to drink all 3.

Oh woe is me. After a pub session with two good (but indiscriminate when it comes to alcohol) friends I came home and opened my treasured 1945 Crofts port. I had the sense to put back a couple of inches for future and now can simply not believe how good it tastes and that we went through 3/4 bottle in half an hour or so. Ah well, some part of me decided that my friends deserved it so I shouldn't berate them for not appreciating it to the level that I believe it should have been appreciated I guess!

Although fine wine has done well over the last few years I think it is always a good investment over the medium to long term. I have been out of the market for some time and am looking into investing again. I would welcome any pointers on recent vintages which should do well and approx prices. Oh and any wine companies
that can be recommended.(and avoided!)

Good News for Wine Drinkers!

Drinking two and half bottles of wine a week can make you live longer, say doctors

Woman with red wine

Two drinks a day could stop a fatal heart attack and help you live longer compared with non-drinkers

After the deluge of bad tidings about alcohol, doctors have come up with the good news.

Two drinks a day could stop a fatal heart attack and help you live longer compared with non-drinkers.

Those who also do moderate amounts of exercise get even more protection from heart disease and premature death, claim medical researchers.

A major study from Denmark shows people who drink in moderation can cut their risk of dying more than those who abstain.

People who neither drink nor exercise had a risk of heart disease almost 50 per cent higher than those who either drank, exercised or did both.

The study, published in the European Heart Journal, followed 11,914 Danish men and women over a period of around 20 years taking part in the Copenhagen City Heart Study.

During the follow-up, 1,242 people died from ischaemic heart disease (IHD) and there were 5,901 deaths from all causes.

The study found non-drinkers were almost a third more likely to die from heart disease compared with people drinking moderately - up to two drinks a day. The risk remained no matter how much exercise was taken by abstainers.

People who drank at least one drink a week and were physically active had a 44 per cent to 50 per cent lower risk of IHD compared to slothful non-drinkers.

Non-drinkers were classified as people who consumed less than one drink each week, while moderate drinkers had between one and 14 drinks per week.

Heavy drinkers drank 15 or more drinks each week and fared as badly as non-drinkers, said the researchers.

One drink corresponded to a bottle of beer, a glass of wine or a pub measure of spirits.

The researchers found moderate drinkers had the lowest risk of death from all causes, including those who seldom exercised. However, within each category of weekly alcohol intake, the physically inactive had the highest risk of death.

Compared with physically inactive non-drinkers, being physically active was associated with a 23 per cent lower risk of death from all causes.

Being physically active and drinking at least one drink a week reduced the risk of death by 12 per cent to 33 per cent.

People who did less than four hours a week of light activity such as walking had a "low" level of activity.

Those doing moderate to high levels of physical activity engaged in light exercise for more than four hours a week, or took part in more vigorous activity for two to four hours a week, such as brisk walking or heavy gardening.

The most active did vigorous exercise for more than four hours a week, regular heavy exercise, or competitive sports several times a week.

Professor Morten Gronbaek, director of research of the National Institute of Public Health at the University of Southern Denmark in Copenhagen, and Professor Berit Heitmann, director of research of the Institute of Preventive Medicine at Copenhagen University Hospitals, supervised the study.

Prof Gronbaek said: "Our study shows that being both physically active and drinking a moderate amount of alcohol is important for lowering the risk of both fatal IHD and death from all causes.

"For both men and women, being physically active was associated with a significantly lower risk for both fatal IHD and all-cause mortality than being physically inactive; and drinking alcohol was associated with a lower risk of fatal IHD than abstaining.

"A weekly moderate alcohol intake reduced the risk of all-cause mortality among both men and women, whereas the risk among heavy drinkers was similar to non-drinkers."

Lead researcher Jane Ostergaard Pedersen, of the National Institute of Public Health, said: "An important finding from our research, for people who have reasons for alcohol abstention such as religious beliefs, previous alcoholism or pregnancy, is that physical activity can reverse some of the adverse health effects associated with alcohol abstention.

"People who did not drink but whose physical activity was moderate or high had a lower risk of IHD than the inactive non-drinkers.

"The lowest risk of death from all causes was observed among the physically active moderate drinkers and the highest risk among the physically inactive non and heavy drinkers."

She concluded: "Neither physical activity alone nor alcohol intake can completely reverse the increased risk associated with alcohol abstention and lack of physical activity.

"Both moderate to high levels of physical activity and a moderate alcohol intake are important for lowering the risk of fatal IHD and deaths from all causes."

this can be good for both health and wealth (and if you can resist drinking it all, the bottles you don't drink are tax free)...
