Wells Fargo was a Charlie Munger favourite and still is Liars.

I haven't seen Buffetts own measurements of ROE, Margins, Employee productivity for banks. Can you post them?

Well, how things change.

I still hold UDG so the divis etc are compounding nicely. I'll be holding for 5 years next year and the second 5 years of compounding will have a greater effect, as in the first 5 years the share should have doubled ( it has already but I am sticking with pure theory here ) . If the share then doubles again in the second 5 year period that should increase my initial investment by 400%.

I sold my Bank of Ireland shares and bought more Anglo Irish Bank shares which I am also holding for the long term.

Recent long term additions are actually 3 Berkshire Hathaway holdings:

Tesco ( TSCO ) - huge potential with entry into the USA. Also DRIP Scheme.

Wells Fargo ( NYSE:WFC )- Excellent run bank, tight credit control, and among the best rated among US banks. DRIP.

US Bancorp ( NYSE:USB ) - another excellent run bank also with tight credit control ( about 2.8% of loan portfolio has exposure to subprime ) and at the current price sports a 5% divi. DRIP.

Funnily enough I found the banks using Buffetts own measurements of ROE, Margins, Employee productivity etc etc. Looks like the banks haven't changed since WB himself invested. BTW you can now pick up USB at around the price that WB bought it for.

I think the title referred to how pathetic the life of the average gullible newspaper-reading soap-watching lard-ass Brit was.
still, go ahead - knock yourself out if youd like to defend them

Seems to be a pretty quiet day today. I'm sure things will heat up later in the week as the interim season is upon us ( bring on those divies !!! ).

Anyone here holding a share for longer than 5 years ???

You can look up my UDG thread if you want since it only seems to be myself and Cambium posting. 8-)

Another one of my lifers is Bank of Ireland also listed on the ISEQ. Nice divi with that one although there are no scrip dividends.

I'm creating this thread so that people may discuss lifers ( ie: shares to hold for life ). It is no secret that in every successful investment portfolio lies a wealth generating low risk asset. This asset lies there untouched and takes advantage of the compounding factor.

These shares are not your typical small growth stocks ( however IF you do bag one that turns out very large - well done ) but these are more often found in the FTSE 100 and 250 range. As with successful growth stocks the P/L Account usually increases year upon year in all the right places. The dividend usually ranges from medium to high and scrip dividends normally pervail.

Sometimes labelled as boring ( and therefore they don't gather much attention from the small folks ) these shares are an essential part of any portfolio. These are shares that are safe, grow year-upon-year and take advantage of the compounding factor. These are the lifers !!!

My favourite is United Drug ( UDG ) listed on the ISEQ index.

What's yours ???

Lifers held: UDG, ANGL, TSCO, NYSE:WFC, NYSE:USB

Once there lived a village of creatures along the bottom of a great crystal river.

The current of the river swept silently over them all - young and old, rich and poor, good and evil, the current going its own way, knowing only its own crystal self.

Each creature in its own manner clung tightly to the twigs and rocks at the river bottom, for clinging was their way of life, and resisting the current what each had learned from birth.

But one creature said at last, 'I am tired of clinging. Though I cannot see it with my eyes, I trust that the current knows where it is going. I shall let go, and let it take me where it will. Clinging, I shall die of boredom.'

The other creatures laughed and said, 'Fool! Let go, and that current you worship will throw you tumbled and smashed across the rocks, and you shall die quicker than boredom!'

But the one heeded them not, and taking a breath did let go, and at once was tumbled and smashed by the current across the rocks.

Yet in time, as the creature refused to cling again, the current lifted him free from the bottom, and he was bruised and hurt no more.

And the creatures downstream, to whom he was a stranger, cried, 'See a miracle! A creature like ourselves, yet he flies! See the Messiah, come to save us all!'

And the one carried in the current said, 'I am no more Messiah than you. The river delights to lift us free, if only we dare let go. Our true work is this voyage, this adventure.'

But they cried the more, 'Saviour!' all the while clinging to the rocks, and when they looked again he was gone, and they were left alone making legends of a Saviour.
