David Pickles turned to political activism in the late 1960s when he started delivering leaflets for the Tories in his native Plaistow.
He famously resigned from the Tories in 2007 to sit as a UKIP councillor for Belmont ward, where he lives with his wife and two children, after becoming disillusioned with their “unprincipled” approach.
In an interview with the Sutton Guardian last year last year, Councillor Pickles said he wants to bring back National Service and bring back punishment using the cane in schools.
In his spare time he listens to rock music and is an avid fan of speedway and was chairman of Wimbledon Speedway in 1987.

So when we say "the war" , we actually mean the Aden insurgency. Obvious really I suppose. If you left school in 1972 , how did you manage 3 years on the frontline of a conflict that ended in 1967?
