09/10/2007 09:23 | Heavy discounting boosted sales UK retail sales growth accelerated in September, buoyed by cooler weather and price cuts, figures show. Retail sales grew 3% in September compared with 1.8% in August, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) said. The chilly end to the month prompted consumers to snap up warmer clothing and footwear, while heavy discounts spurred sales across all sectors. The upbeat data will help to calm fears that the recent credit crunch has had a negative effect on spending patterns. | puffin1
08/10/2007 09:05 | I've heard on the grapevine that it's Energy Saving Week come the 22nd of October, and B&Q has jumped onto the bandwagon for a timely 'green gadgets' offering to the public. We don't normally pander to PR blitzes, but when it's going to help save the environment, we're only happy to oblige. The first green gadget is the Owl Monitor, which for £49.84 (ooh, specific), will check the amount your electrical appliances are costing you, by showing on the LCD display how much energy you're guzzling, the cost of the energy being used, greenhouse gas emissions being produced, plus the temperature and humidity. The middle product in the picture is the Intelligent Extension Lead, which will power down your appliances plugged into the lead, when they're switched on standby. It'll cost £19.98. The third product from B&Q which will help you feel less guilty about jetting off on holidays several times a year, is the most expensive at £79.98, but helps programme your lights, appliances and all manner of electricity-guzzling products so they turn on or off at specific times. I'm sure we've all gone to bed in the evening, leaving the bathroom light on, so this remote control will prove very handy for forgetful sorts. | ariane
08/10/2007 09:00 | Peat may protect permafrost HAMILTON, Ontario, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- Peat and vegetation may buffer the impact of climate change and keep permafrost in northern Canada from melting, researchers said. Permafrost is frozen soil that remains at or below freezing for at least two consecutive years. It currently covers more than 30 percent of Earth's surface and about 42 percent of Canada's land mass, McMasters University said Friday in a release. A report by McMasters researchers, published in Geophysical Research Letters, said a layer of peat above the permafrost acts as insulation by trapping air pockets, which reduce heat transfer and help permafrost retention. The researchers said disturbance of local ground cover or fires in the boreal forest and tundra, however, could accelerate permafrost thaw. They said preservation of peat layer and forests may help in maintaining permafrost in northern regions. | ariane
04/10/2007 04:58 | Kingfisher reinitiated with "hold" Wednesday, October 03, 2007 7:42:32 AM ET Dresdner Kleinwort Wasser. LONDON, October 3 (newratings.com) - Analyst James Grzinic of Dresdner Kleinwort reinitiates coverage of Kingfisher Plc (KFI1.ETR) with a "hold" rating. The target price is set to 200p. In a research note published this morning, the analyst mentions that the company might miss profit forecasts in the near term due to a slowdown in UK consumption. The impact of the probable profit miss on Kingfisher's share price is likely to offset potential longer-term upside, the analyst says. | ariane

02/10/2007 14:53 | Broker tips: Tesco, M&S, Next, Kingfisher, Legal & General Tue 02 Oct 2007 LONDON (SHARECAST) - Tesco rallied today following what Cazenove called "impressive" half year results, which prompted the broker to repeat its 'outperform' rating. Earlier, the supermarket giant reported a better than expected 3.5% rise in UK like for like sales excluding petrol and said it is confident of making further progress in the second half. Group profit before tax for the 26 weeks to 25 August jumped 18% to £1.29bn on sales including VAT up 9.2% to £24.7bn. Trading profit matched expectations with a rise to 10.1% to £1.25bn. Total international sales were 23.1% higher at constant exchange rates at £6.4bn, with the Chinese business, fully consolidated for the first time, contributing £404m to sales during the period. HSBC has taken a close look at the UK retail sector and decided to chop its rating on some of the high street's biggest names. Both Marks & Spencer and Next go down to 'underweight' from 'neutral', with price targets dropped to 620p from 675p and to 1,860p from 1,960p respectively. The broker said it expects group profit before tax for 2008/09 will be flat at Next at £489m. But HSBC raised Kingfisher to 'overweight from 'neutral', with target up to 235p from 228p as the DIY retailer trades at a 28% discount to the sector on 2007 earnings adjusted for property. Elsewhere, music retailer HMV is lowered to 'underweight' from 'neutral' with target cut by 4p to 114p as pre-tax profit for 2008/09 are not expected to be any better than the previous two years. FirstGroup chugged higher after JP Morgan lifted its target on the bus and train firm to 822p from 803p and maintained its 'overweight' rating, while Legal & General improved on a Citigroup 'buy' note and 165p price target. | ariane
