DIRECTORS' SHAREHOLDINGS

The Company has been informed that Mr T J Bowdler, Chief Executive, exercised
options over 12,135 Ordinary Shares of 10p each in the Company under the
Restricted Share Scheme for Tim Bowdler on 17 November 2003 at a total cost of
#1.


In order to fund the tax and NIC payable, Mr Bowdler sold 5,043 shares at 448p
on the same date.


As a result of the exercise, Mr S R Paterson, Finance Director, a potential
beneficiary under the Johnston Press plc Employee Share Trust ceases to have an
interest in the 12,135 Ordinary Shares. The total number of shares in which Mr
Paterson is now interested is 211,373 Ordinary Shares.

Following the sale of shares, the total number of shares in which Mr Bowdler is
now interested is 454,019 Ordinary Shares.
