13/11/2001 08:06 | mattgordon Some of us have no choice - no cable, no adsl, so please don't laugh! CT | charter troll
13/11/2001 06:56 | MG I'v been IE6 with Blue Yonder for 2 weeks now without any problem. Roy | rpet
13/11/2001 00:44 | Pitbull, good to hear from you! I do use my voice line so that is presumably not an option? (I haven't a clue!). I don't have problems with the internet too often and it is reasonably fast. Downloading programs seems slow though, even with an accelerator program in operation but I do not have a lot to compare it all with. Bones | bones
12/11/2001 22:59 | Just tested my connection - 64k through tiscali.co.uk and got a result of 53000 bit per second. Is that any good? CT | charter troll
12/11/2001 11:48 | Sorry - document transfer is slow today on aol causing me to hit the button three times to get a reaction - off to IE. lol. | swingclub
12/11/2001 11:42 | One way around aol problem is to log on to their site. Minimalise the site to the task bar then log on to Internet Explorer. Then you are using the AOL access numbers but operating on IE. The problem with AOL is that they use their own version of IE which for some websites is not 100% compatible - try it, you know it makes sense! SC | swingclub
12/11/2001 11:28 | On the whole Telewest/Blueyonder Broadband is excellent but, for the last week or so it keeps going down on me and I have to reboot to regain connection. I have a feeling it has something to do with my PC setup rather than their service - but have phoned them and the only suggestion was to return to IE5 rather than the IE6 I was using - because IE6 is not yet supported. | mg
12/11/2001 11:04 | i use eclipse, and that came out at 44000 using other option. i suppose it shows you pay for what you get | theblackmamba

10/11/2001 12:36 | bones If you don't use the line for voice calls then phone BT and ask them to increase the gain. On the subject of ISP I recently got kicked off of BT SomeTime for using the service, after using the serivce alot but witihing their terms and conditions they forced me onto the customers we want to lose number which was almost unusable, so I switched my settings to pick up my mail and other things when I could and got kicked off for doing so, I have complaints outstanding with OFTEL and BT Openworld directors office. I switched to freeserve cos it was free and have been mildly impressed so far, but then was it too much advertising that crippled BT, will they invest to match demand? Bones, Hope you are well. 10/11/2001 12:18 | Hmm. I am only getting 42% (24k bits) through a 56k modem. I use AOL and Totalise and the problem is across both. I wonder if my BT line is the cause. I have done PC Pitstop tests and every time it shows 56k in one direction and only 24k or thereabouts in the other. Any techies with any thoughts? Bones | bones
10/11/2001 09:39 | Bloody hell, Blueyonder at the top, eh? That is a surprie to me. | taimur
09/11/2001 11:08 | All my problems were related to having only a 56 k modem and too small a processor. I now have an ISDN line (best I can do out in the country) and with a new comp on just a 64k connection I get at least a tripling of performance. PS I used aol without problem. I currently use onetel £13 and Free247.net £8 as back up. Both perform at the top end of the ADVFN test, but I do think my BT line being reasonable had as big an impact as the isps themselves. | byrdsong
09/11/2001 10:59 | Dear All, there have been a number of threads on ISP's, however this is a thread to allow users to see that if you are having problems connecting to sites or the speed is really slow then you are not alone. For a good while now the majority of customers complaints regarding connection problems have been from AOL customers. As you can see from the results in our tests, AOL have not performed well. Links for ISP tests: However, AOL are not the only service providers to give poor connection speeds. We want you all to be aware which ISP's give poor service and for you to be able to see who you should try and connect with. Think about this: If you have problems connecting to ADVFN or your online broker or anyone else you use in your trading/investing, think how much this can cost you compared to spending say £30 p/month for an ADSL or cable connection which give very very quick download speeds and instant access. | tomj
12/10/2001 08:38 | I appreciate the info guys. Thanks. K. | krakow
12/10/2001 04:06 | ntlworld - I've tried Freeserve (wouldn't touch them again!) AOL (pretty good but not cheap!) and a few of the real cheapies. If you sign up to the phone service it's as near to free on ntl as anything in the market. | trueblue
12/10/2001 02:01 | Avoid the cheapies - you get what you pay for. Or put it another way you wont get what you pay for going cheap. Recently changed to www.cloud-nine.com, unmetered 24/7 access for around 13.00 + VAT. Only drawback is the 2 hr cutoff. Good service and support. No problems to report. Also, check out www.ispreview.co.uk. | kevinmcm

11/10/2001 22:43 | I agree Demon are good. I've got a soft spot for them as I was with them from 1994 - I was in the first 7,000 users. However, I recently switched to ntlworld, as they were offering unmetered access and I'm a customer of their phone service. I don't give a hoot about the digital/cable TV etc. that ntl is going after, but their unmetered Internet dial access is superb, I have to say. If you're an ntl phone customer (cheaper than BT and works fine as far as I can see), then 24x7 unmetered Internet dial is free - no subscription and (obviously) no call charges. There's the occasional hiccup when their Web gateway get overloaded and so all Web access is slow, but that's only happened twice to me in the last 18-24 months, for 3/4 days both times. My phone bill has gone from 80-140 pounds/month to 25-40 - basically line rental and a few calls. Definitely recommend them. If you aren't an ntl phone customer, then you can get the 24x7 unmetered service via your BT line for 10 pounds/month. I'm not sure if Internet calls from BT-using households are treated the same as those from ntl-using households, so I wouldn't assume it's exactly the same service. | popgun
11/10/2001 22:41 | AOL, 14.99 per month, 24/7. Been with them for the last 3yrs, Tech support is generaly good. Try it! They have a free trial offer! Good luck. Jeff. | jgp212 |
