'Sifting Through the Rubble'

With all the structural problems plaguing European economies, most investors now take a dim view toward the Continent. But Matthew Benkendorf, manager of Virtus Greater European Opportunities, has successfully navigated these treacherous markets. His fund ranks among the top 1 percent of European equity funds, according to Morningstar's rankings

At the moment, multinational consumer staples companies in Europe offer especially attractive valuations. They've been consistently profitable and they do a strong business in emerging markets.

We own a number of tobacco names such as British American Tobacco , Imperial Tobacco and Philip Morris International . Philip Morris is a Swiss-based business that owns all the international rights to a portfolio of popular brands such as Marlboro cigarettes. It's a very predictable and stable business that gives all of its excess capital back to shareholders.

"......As a small firm, MFM Slater does not waste time on stocks that do not fit its profile of dynamic growth, modest price/earnings ratios and strong cashflow- a policy that has proved successful

"Mostly it means he goes fishing in the small and mid-cap pool, although he does hold large caps such as BAT and Imperial Tobacco."

Wouldn`t disagree with either of those MP.

--------

Rumours doing the rounds towards the close suggested that a mega Footsie bid would hit traders' screens early next week. Supported strongly earlier this week on talk that China Investment Corporation is looking to take a stake prior to launching a full-scale offer, Imperial Tobacco was puffed up further to 2231p before closing only 3p better at 2176p.

Interesting philanderer. I would be tempted to add a couple of FMCG companies with a large stable of strong brands with emerging markets exposure such as RB. and ULVR to add some balance to that portfolio.

Admittedly they are only yielding 3.5% but their divis are growing every year. Falling soft commodity prices should really help ULVR.
