I see the People's Bank of China has actually reported some gold buying as in January they purchased 12 tons of gold to add to their gold reserves.

The Russian Ministry of Finance has initiated steps to eliminate the value-added tax (VAT) on gold purchases. Currently, gold purchases in the country are charged with 20% tax.

The proposed elimination of tax will increase the Russian domestic gold demand by additional 50-100 tonnes, significantly higher when compared with the average annual demand of nearly 3 tonnes. Official figures published by the World Gold Council (WGC) suggest that annual gold demand in Russia totaled 2.8 tonnes in 2018.

Annual Gold demand gained 4 per cent in 2018, on highest central bank buying in 50 years. Gold demand had reached 4,345 tons, up from 4,160 tons in 2017 while 2018 world gold production was around 3,300 tons. A multi-decade high in central bank buying (651.5 tons) drove growth.

The World Gold Council has upped its Gold consumption forecast for the Indian market for calendar year 2019 to 750-850 tons.

Pension providers by law have to invest in safe assets which usually are Tresuries, why companies such as Royal Sun Alliance (RSA) hold so many of their investments in useless low yielding Tresuries.

I disagree - Pension companies have to invest in Tresuries etc which pay very low interest rates which in turn means less income per £100,000 one has in their pension pot.

Analysts were wrong, clearly the FED would not have kept raising, and the environment for recession was nothing like there at the time. Keeping interest rate low is fantastic for private pensions, not disastrous, I've one and mines invested in equities which needs low rates as are most peoples.

Two years ago I posted that the analysts were forecasting a recession from 3rd quarter 2018 to 2nd quarter 2020.

If Fed had kept aggresively raising rates and tightening then we may well have seen a recession start late 2019, early 2020. It looks like this has been pushed back by as much as a year.

However keeping interest rates so low is unhelpful for savers, disaterous for people with private pensions also brings about lower potentinal GDP growth which long term is bad for the economy.

A weaker dollar may well bring about a rise in the price of gold, however if the dollar weakens by 10% and the price of gold rises by around 10%, in sterling and roubles terms the price of gold has remained pretty well constant.

London & Capital - Global recession is not yet priced into the markets. Look at Gold as an alternative currency.

Fed not putting up interest rates any further, maybe just one more .25% rise is going to push back any coming recession. Fed also say they will not be tightening liquidity any further and will most probably stop tightening in the next couple of quarters.

All this lowers potentinal GDP growth.

Dovish Fed = weaker dollar.

The new normal is Negative or very low interest rates.

Article in FT from 01FEB19, OK take numis with prince of salt- “Highland Gold is another Russia-focused gold miner whose share price has recovered this year. The stock has surged 16 per cent over the past month to trade at 162.7p and has a dividend yield of 6.69 per cent.

The miner said in January that it had produced 269,500 ounces of gold last year and was targeting between 290,000 and 300,000 ounces for this year, driven by a recent acquisition.

In December Highland said it had received permission from Russia to acquire the Valunisty mine. The deal covers three companies with assets in the Chukotka region, where Highland already operates.

Analysts at Numis rate the company a “buy” with a target price of 200p. It expects revenues of $313m for 2018, and ebitda of $157m. “

Today's TelegraphGold stocks up 74pc as central banks build their reservesCENTRAL banks bought more gold last year than at any time since President Nixon ended the gold standard in 1971 as they used the metal to diversify their holdings.Stocks soared 74pc from 374.8 tons in 2017 to 651.5 tons – the second-highest total since records began. The only time it was higher was in 1967."Last year an incredibly large sum of gold was bought by central banks," said Alistair Hewitt, of the World Gold Council, which compiled the figures. "Twelve months ago I would have been talking about how Russia, Kazakhstan and Turkey were the three big central banks buying gold. But now so many more central banks are adding to reserves. India has added for the first time since 2009; Hungary and Poland are adding; Mongolia, Iraq, China."

The talk is the Fed would like two more rate hikes, however the forecast is for just one more rate hike then the Fed is done for this cycle.

With the Fed putting on pause any further interest rate rises will mean a weaker dollar and therefore a rise in the price of gold in dollars.

However HMG share price is quoted in pounds and dividends paid in pounds, therefore will need more dollars to keep the share price where it is and to pay the same dividend.

Interesting to see if gold soon reaches $1350oz, as Gerald Celente say's watch gold fly to $2000 if it breaks $1400.
