France Holding Stakes in State-Owned Firms
PrintAlert
France Telecom (EU:FTE)
Intraday Stock Chart
Today : Monday 17 June 2013
PARIS--French President Francois Hollande said Sunday that his government is planning to keep stakes it owns in some of the country's largest companies because their share price is too low, but he didn't rule out sales in the future.
"Why--as far as companies such as France Telecom SA (FTE.FR) and GDF Suez (GSZ.FR) are concerned -- are we not selling? Because we consider that their share prices are not high enough," Mr. Hollande said in an interview broadcast on M6, a French television channel.
Mr. Hollande added that the government stands ready to sell to raise funds for investment.
"This exceptional income will be assigned to investment (...) in new technologies, in innovations, in companies," Mr. Hollande said.

Ofgem Announces New Rules To Encourage Transparency, More Competition in UK Electricity
06/12/2013| 03:58am US/EasternRecommend: 0 By Cassie Werber
LONDON--The U.K. power regulator Wednesday announced new rules to encourage more competition and transparency in electricity markets and break the "stranglehold" that the six biggest firms currently have over pricing and retail.

In a statement the Office of the Gas and Electricity Markets, Ofgem, said it wanted to create "a more level playing field," in which smaller electricity companies would be able to compete more easily with the "big six" suppliers - Centrica PLC, Electricite de France SA, E.ON UK, RWE Npower, Scottish Power and SSE PLC.

Under the reforms, large energy suppliers will be required to publish wholesale energy prices two years in advance. This will provide guarantees for smaller companies wishing to buy or sell energy in the future, Ofgem said, encouraging more investment in building new generating capacity.

The big six suppliers and the two largest independent power generators, Drax Power Ltd. and GDF Suez Energy UK, will also be compelled to sell electricity to smaller suppliers at a "fair price." They also won't be allowed to refuse "any reasonable requests" by smaller suppliers to buy electricity.

The move toward posted wholesale prices will address insufficient forward trading in electricity markets, Ofgem said. Currently a lack of trading in forward wholesale power has meant there has been little progress on development of trusted reference prices - the signals that power generators need to see so they can decide when to invest in building new power stations, or carrying out maintenance on existing ones, the statement said.

"Ofgem's proposals will break the stranglehold of the big six in the retail market and create a more level playing field for independent suppliers, who will get a fair deal when they want to buy and sell power up to two years ahead," said Andrew Wright, senior partner for markets at Ofgem, in the statement.

Edward Davey, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, said that greater competition and transparency would lead to lower consumer prices. He added: "Ofgem's proposals to increase transparency in the way electricity is traded will give independent generators a foothold in the UK energy market and encourage new players to invest."

Ofgem will have the power to enforce the changes by fining companies that fail to follow the rules, according to Wednesday's statement, which also said that changes are due to come into force in 2014.

GDF Suez turns on 205 MW biomass energy facility in Poland06/06/2013
By Editors of Electric Light & Power/ POWERGRID International

French utility GDF Suez SA said June 5 it had put on stream a 205 MW biomass plant in southeastern Poland.

The Green Unit biomass system, situated in the town of Polaniec in southeastern Poland, is part of the 1.8-GW thermal power plant of GDF Suez Energia Polska, the Polish unit of GDF Suez.

The biomass facility is 80 percent powered by tree farming products, while the remaining 20 percent of its fuel is provided by agricultural by-products. It is estimated to generate enough electricity to meet the power demand of 600,000 homes a year, offsetting 1.2 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

Poland aims to derive 15 percent of its total energy from renewable energy sources by 2020.

Apart from the biomass facility, GDF Suez also operates 102 MW of wind power capacity in Poland and biomass capacity in co-combustion with coal. The French utility has installed 8.2 GW of renewable energy facilities in Europe and plans to build 2 GW more by 2017, it noted

GDF Suez Buys Stake in Nabucco West Pipeline Consortium
PrintAlert
Gdf Suez (EU:GSZ)
Intraday Stock Chart
Today : Tuesday 28 May 2013
By Nicole Lundeen
VIENNA--The French utility GDF Suez S.A. (GSZ.FR) has bought around 9% in the proposed gas pipeline project Nabucco West from Austrian oil and gas company OMV AG (OMV.VI), OMV said Tuesday.
With the purchase, GDF Suez replaces German utility company RWE AG (RWE.XE), which sold its 17% share in the pipeline to OMV--one of the main shareholders of the proposed pipeline--in April for an undisclosed sum.
The transaction between OMV and GDF Suez is expected to close in the second half of 2013 and the companies have agreed not to disclose the purchase price or other conditions of the deal, OMV said.
Nabucco West is one of two remaining proposed pipelines in the running to bring Caspian Sea gas supplied by the Shah Deniz consortium to Europe, helping to decrease the region\'s dependency on Russian gas.
Should the final decision fall in Nabucco West\'s favor, the pipeline\'s shareholder structure will face another shake up because the Shah Deniz consortium has already announced that it will take at least a 50% stake in whichever pipeline is chosen in June.
OMV\'s Chief Executive Officer Gerhard Roiss said the pipeline consortium is looking forward to Shah Deniz\'s upcoming decision.
