Govt plans to shut old power plants in phases
Will be replaced by mega units

Shamim Jahangir 27 January, 2019 12:00 AM printer

The government plans to shut a series of old and vulnerable power plants, which have a total capacity to generate 5,740MW of electricity, in phases within 2030.

The old power plants will be replaced by a series of mega coal- or LNG-based power stations at different locations in the country, an official confirmed.

The Power Division has already prepared a draft summary for submission before the cabinet committee on public purchase with a justification for taking a new LNG-based power plant having capacity to generate 590MW of electricity at Anwara in Chattogram.
It draft said the government has taken a plan to generate 40,000MW of electricity by 2030.

For ensuring electricity, Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) has taken an initiative to shut inefficient and old power plants having capacity of 1960MW by 2021 and around 5740MW by 2030, the draft said.

The government has already allowed three firms, including Indian Reliance, Local consortium of Summit and GE and the Consortium of Unique Hotel and Resorts Ltd, for setting up three separate LNG-based power plants having capacity to generate 1885MW of electricity.

Now, the government has also completed tariff negotiation with local United Enterprise and Company Ltd for setting up another 590MW LNG based power plant at Anwara in Chattogram.

Under the negotiation, the government will have to pay Tk 5.4435 a unit for purchasing electricity from the power plant under 22 years period.

“The latest tariff negotiation for Anwara power plant is comparatively lower compared than previous power plants,” an official of power division said.
But, an energy expert said the government should be more careful about taking LNG based power plants as the tariff of such plants will impact on consumers in case of sudden hike in fuel price on the international market.

Some interesting articles in the Bangla press that are being reported on another BB today. There is a clear commitment to Power and Coal. This all ties in very well with our JDA. It is increasingly positive and clearly decisions need to be made quickly by the Government so these power and coal projects can get started. They will then have achieved something by the time the next election comes around.

Will Open a pizzaria in Bangladesh 😂😂😂

Pizza ovens are firing up the coal industry

As the interminably salty April Ludgate of Parks and Recreation once said, “Time is money, money is power, power is pizza, and pizza is knowledge.” Well, there’s something about pizza you knead to know: It’s helping the coal industry.

Before you freak out, you should know that not all types of pizza are equally guilty in harming the planet. We’re specifically talking about pizza cooked in coal-fired ovens (though wood-fired pizza is also pretty bad for the environment). Now you may be thinking, “Dude! It’s just pizza,” but slow down there, Ninja Turtle. It turns out the pizza-powered coal market is pretty significant.

Pennsylvania mining company Blaschak Coal Corporation had a blockbuster 2018, selling a record-breaking 382,000 tons of coal. That’s because it mines anthracite coal, the super hot-burning fuel used in many personal pizza ovens. Demand for the centuries-old style of cooking has been growing since 2015. And anthracite coal isn’t just used to cook pizza; it’s also used by steelmakers and for home heating.

Not ready to think about a pizza-less planet yet? One option is to cut down on coal-fired pizza and, y’know, just eat oven-baked pizza like a normal person. But there’s also good news about the coal industry in general: coal is on the decline. Last year was a terrible year for the toxic stuff — the U.S. retired around 15 gigawatts of coal capacity.

So if Americans can keep their insatiable desire for coal-fired pizza under control, we might be able to kick our coal habit after all. But I’m not holding my breath. Also, I’m hungry?

Absolutely and still the share price fails to rise so there must be a significant seller in the background unless the rules of supply and demand are all wrong!!! IMO It is danyi which is re assuring in a way as they are probably just managing their holding below 30%?

They have said they will announce the name of their NOMAD before the 1st February, What more do you want. Northland are no longer a NOMAD for anyone!!! Give GCM a break. Danyi IMO are selling so holding the share price back, TBH there are some really big buys going through here and yet the share price continues to languish at its present level.
