The Payra power plant would the first echo-friendly coal-fired power plant in Bangladesh, Chinese partner of the joint venture China National Machinery Import and Export Corporation vice-president Kang Hubiao said at a meeting with a Bangladeshi media delegation to China at its office in Beijing on September 14. The Chinese corporation is set to open its biggest overseas regional headquarters, South Asia Business Centre, in Dhaka to oversee the business of South Asian and ASEAN countries, said Kang Hubiao also the first chairperson of the regional centre. ‘We have our office ready in Dhaka and functioning of the office will begin end of October,’ he said. Bangladesh-China Power Company (Pvt) Limited was formed, incorporated and registered in October 2014 by North West Power Generation Company Limited and China National Machinery Import and Export Corporation. The company is setting up a coal-fired power plant (2X660MW) at Dhankhali in Patuakhali with an estimated cost of $1.56 billion on an area of 397 hectare. The joint venture is expecting to sell each unit of electricity from the plant at Tk 6.65 to the state-run Power Development Board, officials said. It estimated the possible power price considering the supply cost of coal at the project site at $100 per tonne. The Payra power plant will be green and low fuel consuming, Kang Hubiao said. He said that the Payra Power Plant would be a ‘benchmarkR Kang Hubiao said that the South Asia Business Centre will oversee activities of the region. This regional centre, by its employment plan, would take only 10 per cent people from China while 90 per cent from Bangladesh, he said. He also described its business activities in Bangladesh for the past three decades and the fulfilment of some social responsibility in the country through a power point presentation. One of the most prominent foreign companies that engineered and completed major projects in Bangladesh, China National Machinery Import and Export Corporation finished the Barabukuria Coal Mine Project and completed all payment of supplier’s credit. The corporation is also involved in the expansion of the Barapukuria Power Plant Project and did the engineering, procurement and construction of Sirajganj I & II Power Plant Projects. In May, the gas turbines of Sirajganj 225MW Combined Cycle Power Plant (3rd Unit) Project performed a successful ignition, Kang said.
