Just in case anyone is still in here, an offer for the company has been made at 0.01p per share.

From Bloomberg :

"Anglo American Plc curbed its plan to expand diamond production over the next two years after sales slumped in 2019 amid a wider industry crisis.

Anglo’s De Beers unit will mine 1 million carats less than previously forecast in both 2020 and 2021, according to an investor presentation on Tuesday. That equates to less than 1% of global output, but slows the pace of the company’s expansion as an oversupply of rough diamonds weighs on the industry.

De Beers’s buyers have grown increasingly frustrated with the cost of rough stones as the price of polished gems slump. That’s led to wafer-thin margins and losses for some of the traders buying stones from De Beers and Russian rival Alrosa PJSC.

Diamonds Disappoint

Source: De Beers

The crisis has spread to engulf the world’s diamond miners as well. De Beers, which dictates prices to its select group of clients, reported sales through November were more than $1.2 billion lower than the same period in 2018.

The company, which says it mines to meet demand, has responded by offering more flexibility to its customers, allowing them to reject some purchases. Last month, De Beers cut prices across the board by about 5%.

Even so, the company’s production is still set to rise to as much as 34 million carats next year, from 31 million carats in 2019."

Ab,

Thanks for posting that, very sobering for investors in diamond stocks.

Maybe a reason Lucara and Botswana have also taken hits recently.

I have long held the view that synthetics will eventually take over the lower end of the market, as the average person cannot tell it from a real stone when its been worn on someone's finger.

Superg

Good post, and of course there's a reason this has collapsed. All your points are known knowns, as someone once said.

With the biggest diamond mine closing down next year, I expect some investors will look to take advantage of rock bottom prices for other diamond miners, especially those in locations where the cost of employment is extremely low.

This is obviously a risky investment, but I think worth a small punt with money you can afford to lose at these levels.

The confusion arises as you have to click on each shareholder for a more detailed split of how the shares are allocated.

eg:Hargreaves Lansdown 13.216m is split 11.150m in their client accounts, and 2.067 in their share plan accounts.

Similarly, Interactive Investor have 4.621m in their client accounts, and 3.424m in their share plan accounts.

They have snuck out a presentation : hxxp://www.firestonediamonds.com/wp-content/uploads/Investor-Presentation-June-2019.pdf

It includes the diamond prices for the larger stones.

Jackbal,

I wss referring to a situation where they had a problem with the plant or a production breakdown, rather than the poor share price performance.

I think there's a good question for the BOD, to ask why they aren't buying if they're going on record suggesting investors do, I agree.

As mentioned in a previous post here, if, as Paul suggests, it is such a good buying opportunity for investors then shouldn't senior management be backing up his comments with their own share purchases?

Notice that there is an investors presentation on the FDI website from a few weeks ago, mentions how undervalue the company is with the current share price You would think the directors would be making significant investments themselves if that were the case.
