Amplats is the biggest producer of platinum in the world.

Latest cost of production is R12,991 per oz so at ZAR 8:1 USD about USD 1,623 per oz. Current price is USD 1,517 per oz.
So if the world's biggest producer is loosing money at current platinum prices it looks like the platinum price is cheap!

According to the Dow Jones commodity indices (now Dow Jones UBS) that started around 1990 the gold to platinum ratio was well under half what it currently is in the late 1990s. I know their oil index does not track oil well but have found all the others to be ok so far.

Does anyone know which of these data sets is right?

Platinum to gold ratio and detecting bubbles

An article on BespokeInvest about the Platinum-to-Gold ratio today drew my attention.
I therefore wanted to get to know more about this ratio. I knew that the ratio had been trading around 2 over the last 10 years, which was why I invested heavily in Platinum and its little sister metal Palladium in December 2008 and early 2009 when prices crashed, and Platinum became cheaper than gold (the ratio thus dropped below 1). When the economy rebounded, the ratio rebounded to 1.50, but the last couple of months, it has been declining again, and is approaching 1 again, as it is currently at 1.13 with gold prices around 1546 and Platinum around 1742.
I thus started to dig deeper and found historical data at kitco.com
I created an excel sheet with monthly average prices since 1968 which is available for download HERE.

Plat. up 2.5% today alone. Pile in or you'll miss the boat. Forecast to be 15% higher by this time next year.

Is no one interested in Platinum? You'll wish you had been this time next year.

Both Plat and Pall are set fair for a bull run over the next 18 months.

Platinum is set for another Bull Run. The auto industry is recovering and they need it for catylitic converters. Also the EU wants wagons throughout the EU to be fitted with CCs as well. What the EU wants, it usually gets.

traderabc - it certainly pays to go along with GS's buy tips but always remember they will start selling way before they publically change tack. E.g. They were talking crude up to $250 a barrel but went short at $147. So yes long plat is still a good trade but if the trend properly changes, don't fight it.

This is a worry, whenever the thieving Goldman bankers announce something, expect the opposite, as that is probably the way they are betting and with the unlimited money they have access to they move markets a very long way, (ie Nat Gas 2007)

Platinum may be a better investment bet than gold, analysts at Goldman Sachs have said.

Platinum to beat gold, says Goldman Sachs

Platimum to beat gold, says Goldman Sachs Photo: Bloomberg

The bank said gold could face competition for investors' money following the launch of new exchange-traded funds (EFTs) that make it easy to gain exposure to platinum and palladium, another precious metal.

"Gold EFTs may face increased competition for investor demand in 2010 from the introduction of both the platinum and palladium ETFs," Goldman said.

dasv, perhaps, however it doesn't alter the fact that the vast majority of people (globally) don't have a clue when it comes to the economy, currencies and commodities, their blind faith in fiat currency will lead millions of them to the poor house one day
