Good update..

Our US business is performing strongly and ahead of our expectations, reflecting resilient consumer demand and the spirits category continuing to gain share within the total beverage alcohol market. Increased retailer confidence is resulting in some re-stocking in the off-trade channel. The on-trade channel is now open in all states, with some capacity restrictions.

In Europe, off-trade demand remains robust and the on-trade channel has largely re-opened with the easing of lockdown measures in most countries, although the risk of additional restrictions remains where infection rates are worsening. In China, the on-trade channel continues to recover, although larger banqueting occasions are returning more slowly. While the on-trade has also begun to re-open in Africa, India and Latin America and the Caribbean, we expect the pace of recovery in those markets to be more gradual. Travel retail continues to be severely impacted.

Wasting vast amounts on endorsed spirits by stars, it is the product not the face behind it. We are too fickle as humans to care that much, even the descendants of Lassie will start distilling their own booze soon, focus on selling what you already have, and market it better. I’m not paying a premium for Reynolds’ gin, when Greenalls does the job very nicely!

Lockdown boozing helped support off-trade sales (drinks sold at supermarkets or via online retailers) in the second half of Diageo’s financial year to June 2020. North American spirit sales were especially impressive between January and June, meaning the company’s North American division (39% of Diageo) managed a year-on-year increase despite the challenges of lockdown.

US duty tax on whisky remains at 25% after the recent negotiation led by Liz Truss failed to get a reduction - that will continue to weigh on Diageo. And I particularly fear the impact on some of the small independent distillers whose products I’ve enjoyed over the years but who are going to struggle going forward.
