Edmund/niggle

You are both missing the obvious you cannot see the wood for the trees!

Whether it be the discounters like TJ Max or John Lewis the retail sector is struggling and as for talking about how one store is doing is missing the obvious.

You need to look at the whole picture. As for the yield you are pencilling in an uncertain yield as the share price falls the yield rises but so does the risk.

edmundshaw - You are living in the past.

Clothing became the biggest category bought online in 2015.

Footwear is the second biggest selling category on Amazon.

I don't wish to sound rude to either of you but you really sound like either very old men or completely disconnected from the modern world.

The average teenager spends .............wait for it.........9 hours a day online.

TK Maxx and TJ Maxx are part of TJX, who also own Marshalls, and run discount stores.

UK sales were weaker than continental sales. But TJX still increased sales and is looking at expansion, which hardly points to the death of bricks and mortar.

Seriously, what can you really buy online that is going to fit and look good on you? tank-tops, elasticated (cheap) skirts, socks and tights, fine, but fitted clothes, good style and quality materials, these generally need to be checked out in person. I buy loads of stuff on line, I love the convenience, but rarely clothes, certainly not smart stuff.

BTW do not forget the expanding and successful overseas operations of Deb.

NY Boy - "good old fashion retail shoppers" - I'm sorry but that is extremely naive.

"20/25% upside from these levels quite" why?

The shoppers I saw in store Oxford street, were good old fashion retail shoppers, remember different age groups, still come for the experience, family outing, actually see the clothing, feel the material etc none of that you can do online, many foreign shoppers too, it's not everything online you know, many want to try clothes on, make sure the size is right, it looks good for them. Maybe younger lot have time to waste returning stuff etc. Debenhams is growing their online shopping, so something for everyone.

I wouldn't dismiss DEB just yet, 20/25% upside from these levels quite possible this year + 6.5% divi, that good for me, even if they font go up much this year.

Good to see Patesserie Valerie outlet just on the lower ground but visible as soon As you get near the escalators too which was busy.

TK Maxx is a pound shop. I think DEB made a mistake allowing Ashley in the door. There's a really strong potential that people will associate it with Sports Direct, which isn't good.

TJ Maxx? Lol, they are not in the same league as Debenhams, any more than the Co-op is in the same league as M&S.

Well, niggle, Boots, Tesco and Walmart (parent of Asda) are all Planet Retail customers. Has it helped them steal a march on their competitors?

What substandard experience? And ref: immediacy, isn't that why they are principally targetting mobile custom, click and ciollect/return etc? They may have been slower off the mark than etailers, but that does not mean they are going to be ousted by them any more than the banks were ousted by the early e-banks (most of whihc have disappeared or been taken over).

The Jury is still deliberating but watchers have seen quite a lot of evidence, today John Lewis has updated its weekly figures and like for like sales are still in decline. Furthermore inflation now at 2.7% means wage growth isn't keeping up so spending power is in decline.

edit:

TJ Max also struggling

I'm at the eCommerce show, Catalyst, in Manchester. If you'd heard what I have today you wouldn't touch this share with a barge pole.

"Today the shopper has no time for substandard experiences - we are always switched on and always connected. We don't go shopping, we are shopping - we crave immediacy"

Good US retail nos..does well for sentiment here I guess, strong markets ahead of a Tory landslide and a boost to consumer confidence, as we enter the summer sales season shortly.

Schroders increasing is the most interesting development imv.

All good here, expect 20% upside by Q3, follow the Chairman, he knows more than us scavengers, happy to pick up any crumbs on offer, we are not worthy.

I see the Chairman has followed NY Boys purchase, decent buy, I think a dark horse these, don't write these off imho will be 60p + in Q3

Happy holding and enjoying the 6.5% divi, so long as it lasts. Added a few more after I saw the Chairman had bought some. Made shed loads short scalping bitcoin, so plenty of spare cash to invest.

Only the strong will survive. Debs is weak - I'll say it again, look at the balance sheet. You can't buy stock with intangibles.

Their only hope is Sports Direct. That 6.5% divi can't hold. IMHO DYOR

Suppliers will start getting the fear and all those 120 day payment deals will go up in smoke. The company will then have to start paying for goods on delivery, hammering cash-flow and taking them out.

Spent a while in Debs Oxford Street yesterday, pretty damn busy and point of sales queues to check out, they have a good range of merchandise at competitive prices, their promos seem to be drawing in shoppers, all looks encouraging to me.

Happy buying @ 50p and collecting the 6.5% divi

Just so posters can see I am not being biased Marks set to post lower profits. Margins are higher than Debenhams however...

Operating forecast margin Marks 5.4%

Operating forecast margin Debenhams 3.5%

One doesn't have to be clever to realise why Debenhams is on a lower pe ratio. There is always a reason for a bombed out share price and a downward trend.

edit:

Whatever Marks say is bound to affect the sector, I would have waited a bit longer to see how things
were panning out before I recommended investing.

In the meantime Debenhams Sale still on

Marks Sale off

Sales may keep consumers shopping but at a cost to retailers margins.

Monsoon reports fall in sales and profits

Will Debenhams warn in next 6 months? I think they will warn on or before Final results.

Best do your own research, due diligence etc and ignore the noise. I am going again today to see how Debs Oxford street flagship store is going, I was impressed the other weekday evening, plenty of women shoppers on the fashion floors taking advantage of discounting and offers in the costmetics depts. I will see today if the store is still attracting shoppers and if they are parting with their cash.

Mike Ashley,is interested here, watch this space.

liebertime,

I don't have an agenda I don't hold, I used to hold, I used to like the business.

Just interested in following the stock and if I thought things were different I would post different.

One doesn't have to have a grudge against a fracking firm to protest if one thinks its wrong, not that I have a major opinion either way on fracking.

If you read my posts on Debenhams carefully you will notice its not just Debenhams I am negative about, the sector is set for difficulty.
