POPPY CAT HEADS TO THE US
Coolabi secures broadcast deal with SPROUT®

London, 22 March 2011. Leading children's and family entertainment producer and rights management company Coolabi has secured a major US broadcast deal with 24-hour preschool television channel Sprout for its brand new property Poppy Cat. The network, which airs in over 50 million households, has picked up US rights for the show and will air the 52 x 11-minute animated series later in 2011.

Poppy Cat brings to animated life the wonderful world of the preschool children's character created by Lara Jones in the Macmillan book series that has sold over 2.5 million copies worldwide. The series is co-produced by Coolabi's television production arm Coolabi Productions and the Emmy shortlisted and BAFTA award-winning King Rollo Films.

Michael Dee, Director of Content at Coolabi says: "We are thrilled to be breaking into the competitive US marketplace. Securing an American broadcast deal for a UK-produced show is notoriously difficult, but clinching the deal before the show has even aired in the UK is a real coup for Coolabi. Sprout is the ideal home for Poppy Cat in the US and we are excited to bring this new pre-school property to new audiences as the show rolls out globally this year."

"We are delighted with this opportunity to bring such a loveable, popular character from the pages of the Poppy Cat book series to millions of television screens all across the U.S.," said Andrew Beecham, senior vice president of programming at Sprout. "We are dedicated to providing fresh, interactive, learning-based entertainment to preschoolers and their families and we're thrilled that Poppy Cat is joining the Sprout family."

As well as launching on Nick Jr UK in May, the series has also already been presold to a number of other international territories, including Nick Jr Australia, RTE Ireland, YLE Finland, TV2 Norway, and TVO, SCN and Knowledge Network in Canada, with further international deals to be announced shortly.

Coolabi purrs with Poppy Cat US pick-up

UK kids media company Coolabi has scored its first major US broadcast deal after PBS preschool channel Sprout picked up the company's original series Poppy Cat.

The 52x11' series was commissioned by Nick Jnr in the UK and, though it isn't due to air on the channel till May, has already been sold to 16 territories, with PBS becoming the first stateside.

The success of Poppy - a property Coolabi has developed as a coproduction together with King Rollo Films - has already made an impact on the company's bottom line.

Coolabi, whose business is predominantly based on exploitation of pre-existing classic IP such as Bagpuss and Purple Ronnie, today reported its first ever profit after tax, with Poppy having proved a driver.

"2010 is the first year in which one of our internally developed assets, Poppy Cat, has made a material financial contribution to the group," said Coolabi CEO Jeremy Banks.

"The early momentum shown by Poppy Cat has demonstrated our ability to launch successfully a new IP asset in this challenging trading environment.

"Securing an American broadcast platform for a UK-produced show is notoriously difficult, but clinching the deal before the show has even aired in the UK is a real coup for Coolabi."

The series has already been presold to a number of other international territories, including Nick Jr Australia, RTE Ireland, YLE Finland, TV2 Norway, and TVO, SCN and Knowledge Network in Canada, with further deals on the cards.

Coolabi today reported static revenue of £2.9m (US$4.7m) for 2010 but a 164% increase in earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization to £540,000. The company made a modest profit of £280,000 versus a loss of £1.1m in 2009.

Lord Gnome - agree but the trouble is that we haven't got a clue what each of the company's properties pulls in terms of revenue and profit. For example in 2007 when Purple Ronnie was acquired it had revenue of approx. 1 mio a year. What is that figure now? What profit does it make?

£280k profit, not exactly explosive results. I suppose the fact they are still in positive territory is a good sign but growth appears to be slow. Nothing to suggest that this company should be worth £10m like iloveit thinks it should.

Orange1 - What we need to know is 'When will the money start to flow from screenings of Poppy Cat'. I doubt that the money has been banked already, so the revenue (from what has been a major investment for such a small company) should be yet to come. COO are certainly putting the building blocks in place and the future looks good, but I would like to see more tangible signs of success in profits and cashflow.

Lord Gnome,

Agree with your assessment. The point to watch here is the cash situation. There is not much left in the pot. Could a fundraising of some sort be on the cards? If it is a share issue there will be more dilution for exisitng holders.

So, finally, we have the long-awaited results. Good, and a big improvement, but not enough to set the market alight, I'm afraid. I had expected EPS of 1p as per broker forecast, so 0.4p comes as a bit of a disappointment. A historic PE of 20 is a big ask and I can't see the shares making much headway from here in the short term. It all looks good for the future, but then again, with any small company, there is always the promise of 'jam tomorrow'. Not long until we find out what Mr Market makes of it all. Probably not a lot. No doubt also we'll get the usual animated ramblings from our resident muppet.
