COLT Selects Lucent Technologies to Supply Next Generation
Optical/Data Equipment for Pan-European Deployment

HANNOVER, Germany, March 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Lucent Technologies
(NYSE:LU) today announced that it has been awarded a contract by COLT Telecom
Group plc (COLT) to provide next-generation technology and solutions for COLT's
evolving range of packet-based services for corporate and SME customers,
including its market-leading portfolio of Ethernet services. COLT will deploy
infrastructure, software and services from Lucent's portfolio of optical
networking products.
COLT will deploy the Lucent solutions in its "simple" dedicated Ethernet
Private Line (EPL) services as well as in more advanced and flexible services
such as Ethernet Access to IP Services and Ethernet Private LAN (EPLAN --
multipoint). All these services can be offered in metro, national and
international domains, allowing end-users more flexibility in their
connectivity and bandwidth requirement choices.

Lucent and COLT are working jointly, to increase awareness and demand for these
new Ethernet services in the marketplace. As part of Lucent's Market Advantage
Programme, a joint marketing plan has been created, including sales and
presales advanced training, customer-focused events, raising end-user awareness
and understanding of Ethernet services and focused end-user sector specific
research. This initiative will be ongoing as COLT launches new services
through 2005 and onwards.

Lucent Worldwide Services (LWS) will support COLT to ensure a smooth deployment
and implementation of this new technology, providing, design, deployment,
integration and other professional services. Lucent will also provide ongoing
maintenance and technical support while helping COLT to market and sell
Ethernet Services to its corporate customers.
Product background
Lucent's Ethernet solutions combine the speed and reliability of fast optical
backbones with proven Ethernet technology that is the standard in local area
networks. Lucent will provide COLT with its Metropolis(R) AM and ADM family of
products, complemented with TransLAN(R) technology for full Ethernet transport
and networking capability between customers' businesses in multiple locations.
These products offer a converged platform, supporting todays customer service
requirements while offering cost-effective multiservice support without the
expense of creating and maintaining a separate overlay data network.
Metropolis(R) ADM serves as a high density aggregation, integrated
Ethernet-over-SDH multiplexer, enabling service providers to migrate from
existing time-division multiplexed (TDM) networks to data-aware packet
networks, while also providing the foundation for access to advanced
application based services. Metropolis(R) AM, a compact and cost-effective
Ethernet/SDH multiplexer, offers a wide selection of service interfaces,
allowing carriers to continue their traditional services while delivering new

To manage the network, Lucent will be supplying the Navis(R) Optical Management
System (OMS) that provides multiple network management functions, including
element management, service provisioning and service assurance within optical
networks. The system features an advanced Ethernet Management module that will
allow COLT to perform single-user, automated provisioning of complex Ethernet
networks and services over any transport network. This allows customer
services to be turned up quickly by using the automatic routing capabilities
and "point-and-click" features of the OMS graphical user interface. The
product is part of the Lucent Navis(R) iOperations Software portfolio of open,
standards-based network and element management systems.
