          RONALD E. MARTZ ELECTED VICE PRESIDENT AND GENERL AUDITOR,
                    COASTAL STATES MANAGEMENT CORPORATION

HOUSTON, July 1, 1997 -- The Coastal Corporation announced today that Ronald E.
Martz has been elected vice president and general auditor of Coastal's
management subsidiary, Coastal States Management Corporation, with
responsibility for internal audit department activities for the parent company
and its subsidiaries.

Mr Martz, 43, will be based in Houston and oversee audit staff in Houston,
Detroit, and Colorado Springs.  He was previously assistant general auditor
responsible for the Houston audit staff.  He will report to Mr Jeffrey B. Levos,
vice president and controller of The Coastal Corporation.

Since joining Coastal's audit department 16 years ago, Mr Martz has held
positions of increasing responsibility as senior auditor, audit manager, and
director.  Before joining Coastal, he was a process engineer for R.J. Reynolds
Industries and a corporate field staff engineer for Atlantic Richfield Company.

Mr Martz holds a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the University
of Cincinnati and a master of business administration degree in finance from the
University of Houston.  He and his wife Lynn live in Houston.
