                   COASTAL'S COLORADO INTERSTATE GAS COMPLETES
        $100 MILLION PUBLIC OFFERING OF FORTY-YEAR 6.85% SENIOR DEBENTURES


HOUSTON, June 30, 1997 -- The Coastal Corporation said today its subsidiary
Colorado Interstate Gas Company (CIG) has completed a public offering through
underwriters of $100 million in principal amount of forty-year 6.85% Senior
Debentures due June 15, 2037.

Chase Securities Inc.; Bear, Stearns & Co. Inc.; UBS Securities; Credit Lyonnais
Securities (USA) Inc.; and Nesbitt Burns Securities Inc. were the underwriters.

CIG said it intends to use part of the proceeds from the offering to pay down a
$50 million term-loan credit facility.  The balance of the proceeds are intended
for general corporate purposes.

Colorado Interstate Gas Company is a subsidiary of The Coastal Corporation
(NYSE:CGP), a Houston-based energy holding company, with consolidated assets of
more than $11 billion and subsidiary operations in natural gas marketing,
transmission, storage, gathering, and processing; petroleum refining and
marketing; oil and gas exploration and production; chemicals; power production;
and coal.
