If I recall correctly, the Eskom VRFB trial gets under way next month. It is now also reported that Energy Minister Jeff Radebe will today sign 27 IPP contracts (many will be renewables) that have been held up (Zuma's captured Eskom refused to sign) since early 2016 and more recently delayed by the failed NUMSA court case. Getting these contracts signed is very good news for SA future VRFB prospects...

[update] Contracts signed!

"China has the largest and highest-grade vanadium resources in the world..."

Not sure about that, unless he is referring to the large so called 'Stone Coal' reserves. Most Vanadium production in China has come via the by-product (slag) of steel production. However getting Vanadium out of 'Stone Coal' has historically been a very 'dirty' process, which would be at odds with China's policy of environmental cleanup. Perhaps they will find a cleaner way, but in the meantime it would make more sense to import concentrate (as they do with high-grade iron-ore), rather than mine their own...

We think there's a revolution coming in vanadium redox flow batteries," Robert Friedland told the Northern Miner in an April interview. Among his other high-profile pursuits, Friedland is CEO of HighPower Exploration, a private firm with a controlling interest in Beijing-based Pu Neng,

China has the largest and highest-grade vanadium resources in the world and is poised to use this miracle metal to fundamentally transform its electricity grid. With massive amounts of renewable energy and storage coming on line, China will create the most modern, clean and efficient grid in the world," commented billionaire mining celebrity and chairperson of Pu Neng, Robert Friedland. The company has developed the most reliable, longest-lasting vanadium flow battery yet, with more than 800 000 hours of demonstrated performance. The combination of Pu Neng's proprietary low-cost ion-exchange membrane, long-life electrolyte formulation and innovative flow cell design sets it apart from other providers.

Court rejects Numsa's urgent bid to block IPP signing...

Cape Town – "The high court has rejected an urgent application to interdict the signing of 27 outstanding renewable independent power producer (IPP) projects... The 27 projects are expected to create over 61 600 jobs and draw investment worth R56bn to the economy, according to the energy department..."

And stimulate grid-scale and local 'Energy Storage' demand...

Note that the usual suspects (Zuma and cronies - former Eskom executive Koko included) never complained about how nuclear would take jobs from coal. The real problem they have is that any major renewables expansion will likely kill off nuclear altogether. That puts them in a bad place, 'cos they have already taken Putin's money...
