Re "Questor" on 1st May 2011, he highlighted GULFSANDS PETROLEUM (GPX) as a well run company (which it was) with assets mainly in Syria, the share price was at one time 400p.

He wrote, the troubles in the region make it difficult to predict what will happen and a buy rating would be a speculative gamble. How right he was, share price now a weak 56p.

Could have a breakout?

Waiting for confirmation.

I would say that Questor can be very uninformed at times. An example would be its bizarre coverage of Lonrho from 2011-13. Garry White recently still seemed to imagine that the management was legitimate despite clear evidence to the contrary. A very naive boy it would seem, and that would be giving him the benefit of the doubt! I hope it isn't worse than that. Didn't he hear the gossip?

As for Balfour Beatty, I have a feeling that they are on the way up and that I should have bought rather more yesterday.

Those who follow Questor, will have a reasonably safe long term investment portfolio, suitable for the very cautious investor, but for market watchers, too cautious.

IMO as it seems to be rising from a low point, I would rate BBY (good 5.85% div - projected 6%) as a STRONG HOLD and a BUY on dull days.

Contract win looks good. I'm also very aware that the rubbish Questor saw it as just a hold recently which encouraged me to buy this morning.

Another contract won for £200m +

Balfour Beatty wins Herefordshire road work

Herefordshire Council has appointed Balfour Beatty Living Places to deliver a public realm contract including highway maintenance, highway schemes, traffic signals, public rights of way, street cleaning and lighting.

Balfour Beatty beat off its nearest rivals for the work, Amey and Costain, and will start work on 1 September, replacing incumbent Amey. The contract is worth about £20m a year and could be extended beyond ten years depending on performance.

Do analysts expect the dividend to be cut this year??

Questor in Telegraph:
Balfour shares are trading on a 2013 earnings multiple of 9.8, falling to 8.2. This is a discount of around 15pc to its historic average. Analysts expect the dividend will be cut this year, but the prospective yield is 5.8pc.
Although longer-term prospects for players in the global infrastructure market are sound, Balfour needs to further rebalance its business towards growing markets. This will take time. Questor rates the shares as a hold.

Balfour Beatty expects profits to hold steady in 2013 despite a weak start to the year in some markets.

The international infrastructure group said that the level and mix of its order book remained broadly unchanged from £16 billion (€18.5 billion) at the end of March, as it provided a trading update in early July ahead of its results for the half-year, which will be announced on August 14.

The firm said that depressed activity in Australia had adversely impacted its professional services profitability, as projects continue to be cancelled in the natural resources sector. However, this fall should be partially offset by contract settlements in the second half and improved performance in Asia and the Middle East.

In the UK, first-half performance in the construction sector has been weak, with results further impacted by the £50 million (€58 million) profit shortfall announced at the end of April. However, Balfour Beatty expects its losses in the first half to be recouped in the second half.

Meanwhile, in the US, expectations are high for an increase in revenue in construction in the second half.

Looking ahead, the company said that it expected "profits to be significantly more skewed to the second half than in previous years, with the full-year result remaining in line with management's expectations."
