KENNETH DICKERSON TO RETIRE AS ARCO SENIOR VP;
MARK HAZELWOOD TO HEAD ARCO EXTERNAL AFFAIRS

LOS ANGELES, July 30 --ARCO Senior Vice President Kenneth R. Dickerson has
elected to retire at the end of 1997, ending 34 years of service with the
company. For the last nine years, Dickerson directed ARCO's External Affairs
operatons, inlcuding the Government Affairs, Public Affairs and Environment,
Health and Safety units.

Dickerson, 61, will be succeeded by Mark L. Hazelwood, 47, who was elected ARCO
Senior Vice President by the Board of Directors on July 28. Hazelwood's
appointment is effective immediately.

Dickerson joined ARCO as a staff attorney in 1963 after practicing law and
serving as an assistant district attorney in Longview, Texas. During his lengthy
ARCO career, he held managerial assignments in Bolivia and Venezuela and served
as General Attorney, Associate General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel in
Dallas and Los Angeles. He was elected ARCO Vice President and General Tax
Officer in 1985 and Senior Vice President of External Affairs in 1988.

"As head of External Affairs, Ken helped ARCO establish a reputation for
concerned, aggressive participation in the environmental, political and
community issues affecting the company and the industry," said ARCO Chairman and
Chief Executive Officer Mike R. Bowlin.

"Beginning with his early years in South America, Ken has demonstrated an
understanding and appreciation of ARCO's commitment as a responsible global
citizen and has worked tirelessly on behalf of that commitment. I am pleased
that Ken will continue to work on a number of key projects affecting ARCO
between now and the end of the year."

Hazelwood, who until his new assignment was President of ARCO Alaska Pipelines
(AAP), started with ARCO in 1979. He is a graduate ot Texas Tech University and
the University of Houston Law School.

During his ARCO career, Hazelwood held management positions in ARCO Oil and Gas
Company and ARCO Alaska, Inc. and served on the Corporate Staff. He was also
Senior Vice President of ARCO Transportation Company and President of ARCO Pipe
Line Company prior to becoming President of AAP in 1996.

In announcing the appointment, ARCO Executive Vice President and Chief Financial
Officer Marie L. Knowles said that, for the time being, Hazelwood will continue
to provide direction to AAP and remain as Chairman of the Owners Committee of
the Trans Alaska Pipeline System.
