ARCO ALASKA PRESIDENT KEVIN O. MEYERS
ELECTED ARCO SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT

LOS ANGELES -- Kevin O. Meyers, President of ARCO Alaska, Inc., has been elected
a Corporate officer and Senior Vice President of ARCO (NYSE: ARC), it was
announced today by ARCO Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Mike R. Bowlin. 

Meyers, 44, has been ARCO Alaska's President since February, 1998 when his
predecessor, Ken Thompson, was named ARCO Executive Vice President with
responsibility for ARCO's oil and gas development in the Asia-Pacific region and
worldwide exploration activities.

"With Ken Thompson relocating from Anchorage to Los Angeles to supervise our
growing protfolio of exploration programs and Pacific Rim projects, including
ARCO's upstream operations in Alaska, California, China and Indonesia, Kevin
will provide the strong leadership needed to maintain our momentum in Alaska,"
Bowlin said.

Meyers joined ARCO in 1980 as a Senior Research Engineer and has held positions
with ARCO's technology, international, Lower 48 and Alaska operations.  Among
his many assignments, he was Vice President of Engineering & Technology for
ARCO International Oil and Gas Company and Senior Vice President of ARCO
Alaska's Prudhoe Bay Unit, the post he held prior to being named President of
ARCO Alaska.

Meyers is a graduate of MIT with PhD in Chemical Engineering and of Capital
University with bachelors degrees in Chemistry and Mathematics.
