                     Associated British Foods plc ("ABF")
 
 
During the course of last week the Chairman, Garry Weston, suffered a mild
stroke.  He has made good progress and is expected to leave hospital shortly.
 
 
Although Mr Weston is expected to make a full recovery, there will be
a period of several weeks during which he will rest and recuperate.
 
The Board of the Company met today.  It is intended that during this interim
period the Deputy Chairman, Harry Bailey, will fulfil the role of acting
Chairman.  The day-to-day running of the business will continue to be the 
responsibility of Peter Jackson who was appointed Chief Executive on 1 June
this year.
