Yes the dividend payment will cause a fall in the sp, but then you get the divi (or pay for it if youre short lol) so the share price doesnt change at all.

That is such basic stuff. So, looking forward, some education is needed ?

yeah - that makes sense

after all, the poorer sections of society and those with little savings will carry on spending, whilst the more affluent lot will padlock their purses/wallets.

Alternatively, maybe reduced house sales will lead to people wanting to spruce up what they've got etc

Yes again another report thats looking backwards rather than forwards. The dividend payment itself will add to a fall in the share price here whilst the broker report thinks this company will be immune to the consumer downturn because of the companys higher end- demographic!!!!!!! please please pull the other one.

Havent they grasped that its the higher end squeesed middle who will be hurt most.

Numis - 31/3/11:

After a solid H2, Laura Ashley has delivered a record PBT of £19.3m. While trading through February has been weaker, margins are expected to remain stable and we think Laura Ashley's higher-end demographic will prove more resilient through 2011. We leave our Jan-12 PBT forecast of £19.5m unchanged and, while we think the 6% dividend yield, international growth opportunity, and strong net cash position warrant a premium to the sector, after a strong run in the share price and the stock now trading at 13.7x Jan-12 earnings, we move to Hold. Target price - 25p.

Lol! I suppose we should just increase the credit card limit as the previous Government felt compelled to do! Shouldn't we just sell our gold and pay off the deficit, oooops forgot call me Gordon sold it at $300! dear oh dear! Filtered.

IC Herr Crookheim is back to check the damage before retreating for the weekend, Herr C, what your regiment want to know is where will you be leading them on Monday.....?

Should they regroup and advance an retake the upper slopes of 20-20.5p or will they be getting trench feet in the muddy teens - 14-17p some say?

Just thought Id look at the daily chart again......

Chart showing the very bearish position ALY finds itself in today. doesnt look very good for the rest of this year.

Another thin gi havent mentioned...... margins, OK we know the company say within the results period gross margins remained stable, but what about going forward??.

Surely competition will errode margins and ALY has plenty, truly plenty of competition.

"mechanical trader, please don't take those indicators as gospel. While the MACD remains above 0, I am still bullish." ...ends.

Its below 0 if you check the chart above!! . And RSI is looking oversold because of the massive sell volume yesterday.

The biggy against bulls it the massive dark down candle on the chart.

Its a weekly chart aswel dont forget.

mechanical trader, please don't take those indicators as gospel. While the MACD remains above 0, I am still bullish. The Slow stochastic is a very short term indicator and the low RSI indicates that we are heavily oversold. Today's candlestick is important as it shows a reversal from 18p and show's that is going to be difficult to break.

Sub 10p based on sector sentiment is not a good argument, as you say the management are not at fault. I would rather be long here than short.

What would the yield be if it were at 10p with an increased dividend ? Remember it was increased with a larger cash postion.

The weekly chart paints a dire picture of the position here in ALY.

I have no problems with my position here mreasygoing. I even expect going into autumn to see this in single digits below 10p. No fault of management just market sentiment to retailers.

With the increased dividend and cash position I think that its unlikely the share will break below 18p. Don't get to badly burned mechanical trader. As you're short I can totally understand your current wordings (I would do the same :-)

mt, no worries, but the same could be said for someone who is short to constantly de-ramp! I guess your trying to balance the books, fair enough!

mt, don't think we need to post every bearish article on the dire state of the UK, guess most of us live here so have a fair understanding already! But thanks for your warnings, I'm not even holding now but it's getting a bit tedious!

Worth flagging up again.......

"There has been a decline in performance since the beginning of February, which we attribute to a general weakening in the consumer economy," the company said in a statement.

British consumers look increasingly unwilling to spend as muted earnings growth and higher inflation, fuelled by January's rise in VAT (sales tax) and higher oil and food prices, bite into real incomes. ........ ends.

Something Ive been saying all along and this doesnt even mention job cuts and interest rate rises.
