Just as perplexed as you edmundshaw, that was a helluva rise in retail spending

perhaps with more people not moving home, plenty of money available that normally feeds the property food chain..estate agents ..mortgage brokers ..solicitors..stamp duty (poor gordon) etc etc

or maybe with inflation on the rise, some folks think that not much point in saving in this environment so might as well spend spend spend.

So are folk having a last fling in the sun before gritting their teeth, ignoring reality, or switching from driving and flying into the sun to less expensive pleasures like a new skirt or blouse?

Any views welcome, I'm a little perplexed myself...

Yup.

"Shoppers appeared to have brushed off the economic downturn, by spending like never before in May, according to official figures.

The Office of National Statistics said sales rose by 3.5pc during May, the strongest monthly growth in sales since the data began being collected in January 1986. Analysts said that the sunny and warm weather helped encourage people to hit the high street and stock up their fridges with summer food.

Food sales rose 3.3pc by volume as people bought salads and stocked up for barbecues, while clothing sales jumped 9.2pc as shoppers sought out new summer outfits..." (continues...)

yep, it's more punters selling anything to get away from pain at the moment, imo.

Dow down 200, lows of the day, I doubt tomorrow will be great for most stocks. Dow RSI looks like it needs to hit the 25 or lower to make a short term bottom imo - another 500 points I guess then we can start going up across the market.

Well it could be worse. Look at LAN & SUY (clearly doubts on the insurance angle weighing very heavy there)! Clinton Cards and Dire Straits Group (sorry, DSG) also in the poo today...

In fact in AXN we are just down more or less in line with the General Retailers sector for the day.

Yes edmundshaw, he gets a bit wreckless with that line - always preserve capital to make sure you stay in the game ay :-)

US absolutely getting creamed, I suspect the Dow has to have a major 400-500 point tonking in order for enough to capitulate and enough to start buying back in again.

Dow RSI down at low 30's but when the market gets this pessimistic it often goes to the mid 20's or lower

Good old Kipling.

Not so sure about making "one heap of all your winnings - And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss" though... :)

Well no one is closer to the action than the FD and I don't believe for one minute he bought £22k worth (on top of the £38k worth he already has) as a token gesture to try and support the SP! Nah, sales are evidently in line, they're probably well on track to meet the £15m pbt house broker forecast, and Piggott seized the opportunity to up his holding while it's cheap. Simple. Chances are we'll see more director buying...

Selling of menswear and McNally appointment are what convinced me. Yup, I think we're definately on the verge of recession but I don't agree that "clothing companies such as Alexon will be hardest hit." (she-ra 444) The bestselling items at Dash and Ann Harvey this week are in the £25 - £30 price range, hardly luxury items. Historically, it's menswear that suffers most during recession, so dumping 115 Style stores for £1 when they did was a smart move. And the icing on the cake - they now have a smart lady on top!

IF you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!'

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
' Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch,
if neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

This is the guy who said he wasnt even bothered if AXN went to zero as he had more than made up for it due to making significant profits on spread betting it.LOL

RE:Past profits.
The past is no guarantee of the future.Profits and revenue arent a static element within a company.

LoL - the market factors that in. If you think there's going to be a crippling recession then lots of others do and the market factors it in.

Why would AXN make losses? The made £15m last year, this year is forecast to be higher - @ a market cap of £31m that is astonishing.

If a private equity co were to buy this co it would pay for itself with 2 years profits!

It pays a 13% divi, it has no debt.

Ted Baker rresults out today, revenues up 8.4% for the 19 weeks to June 7 - disaterous ay?

FCCN upgraded to hold from buy today by Altium.

For a guy that didn't know what a T25 was a few weeks ago you're quite an ecomomic expert.
