23/7/2004 07:46 | For those that don't want to click on the link above the important bit from The Times is: "Lloyds TSB and Royal Bank of Scotland would both be interested in the Abbey, even though the Commission blocked Lloyds TSB’s takeover attempt last time. The authorities, however, could be tempted to take a more positive view of such a deal this time round. One of the main reasons why the deal was stopped last time was because the Abbey aimed to become a force in offering banking services to small businesses. That aim has now fallen by the wayside, as Abbey has instead turned back to its core markets. There is now also a different face at the Competition Commission. Paul Geroski is believed to take a more empirical view of mergers than his predecessor. The two British banks could be encouraged to enter the fray if a foreign bidder such as the US’s Citigroup or Spain’s BSCH decided that the time had come for cross-border banking consolidation. The latest spate of speculation has centred on Citigroup, whose business portfolio is light in Europe. BSCH, a business partner of Royal Bank of Scotland, has even gone as far as making an informal approach to the Abbey. The time may have come for a bid for the Abbey. If the bank begins to make good progress the shares will look too expensive for potential bidders, hoping to get the bank on the cheap before recovery really does set in." | dm1

22/7/2004 18:40 | Bid rumour (none reported) or leaking of interims. If price has a bid premium built in and is being supported by this then perhaps some good interim figures will also lend support at these levels. Either way somebody thinks they know something, not a good time to short. | lavagrouch
