A consortium led by Alstom SA (ALO.FR) has signed a contract valued at 1.8 billion euros ($2.22 billion) to provide a 67-kilometer driverless metro system in Montreal, the company said late Thursday.
Alstom said its share of the contract was about EUR1.4 billion.
Canadian engineering and construction company SNC-Lavalin Group Inc. (SNC.T) is also a member of the consortium, which is known as Groupe des Partenaires pour la Mobilite des Montrealais, or Groupe PMM.
Under the terms of the contract, the group will supply 212 Alstom Metropolis metro cars, driverless train-control systems, platform screen doors and 30 years of operations and maintenance services, Alstom said.
Alstom expects the first segment of the new metro to start operations in summer 2021.
The French train maker also said it will open a research and development facility in Montreal to investigate urban mobility control systems.
