U.K. energy regulator Ofgem said Friday that power companies have agreed to pay a 10.5 million pound ($13.8 million) redress following power cuts last August, and that it has identified issues surrounding National Grid Electricity System Operator's management of the system.
The regulator said that Hornsea One Ltd. and RWE AG (RWE.XE) have agreed to pay out GBP4.5 million for not remaining connected after a lightning strike that caused interruptions to consumers' energy and significant disruption to commuters.
However, U.K. Power Networks, which began reconnecting customers without being asked to by the National Grid Electricity System Operator, will pay GBP1.5 million, Ofgem said.
Ofgem said that it will accelerate its planned review of National Grid Electricity System Operator's structure and governance.
"Our investigation has raised important questions about National Grid's Electricity System Operator, which is why our review will look at the structure and governance of the company," Ofgem Executive Director Jonathan Brearley said.
