Repsol SA is fully responsible for the oil spill that occurred in Peru after high waves triggered by a volcanic eruption in Tonga, Peruvian Prime Minister Mirtha Vasquez said.
"They have full responsibility and therefore that has to lead us to think of the consequences, even sanctions and indemnizations," she said Monday, speaking on Peruvian broadcaster RPP.
According to Ms. Vasquez, Repsol wants to argue it isn't responsible for the disaster, alleging that it wasn't notified in time of the unusually high waves caused by the Tonga eruption.
Repsol's Peruvian unit said in a press release last week that the spill was caused by the "sudden and extraordinary anomalous waves caused by the volcanic eruption in Tonga." It said it was committed to mitigating and repairing the damage caused by the spill.
Representatives of the company didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
