Nestle SA said Tuesday that it will invest 120 million Swiss francs ($130.57 million) in projects to help regenerate ecosystems in the areas where its bottled-water division operates.
The Swiss food giant said it will implement more than 100 projects in 48 sites by 2025 as it works toward getting certifications for all of its waters sites from the Alliance for Water Stewardship, an independent nonprofit dedicated to advancing sustainable water use.
As part of the initiative, Nestle said it would deliver water treatment, filtration and pipeline infrastructure for the municipal water supply in Benha, Egypt, and help develop river restoration and renaturation projects in Vosges, France, among others.
Nestle said it would work with local water users, communities and experts to identify, develop and advance projects specific to the challenges each location faces.
It would use a methodology designed by the Volumetric Water Benefit Accounting, a guide for water stewardship activities, to calculate and evaluate the benefits of the projects, Nestle said.
Nestle said it would share details on water usage at each of its sites and how it is contributing to regenerate the areas where it operates.
