Nestle SA (NESN.EB) is trialing a blockchain platform that allows consumers to digitally track their food back to the farm in a bid to make its supply chain more transparent.
The pilot program will trace milk from New Zealand to factories and warehouses in the Middle East and will eventually track palm oil coming from the Americas, Nestle said on Tuesday. It marks the latest initiative since the Swiss food company said in February it would work towards full disclosure of its supply chain.
Nestle partnered with OpenSC, which was founded by the World Wildlife Fund and Boston Consulting Group Digital Ventures, on the blockchain technology.
"This open blockchain technology will allow anyone, anywhere in the world to assess our responsible sourcing facts and figures," Benjamin Ware, global head of responsible sourcing at Nestle, said.
