NEW YORK, Aug. 1, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Sixty years ago, Marimekko revolutionized the textile industry with its bold and brilliant, unconventional patterns. At first, Marimekko was a phenomenon. Then it grew into an outlook on life: courageous, egalitarian and positive. Its strikingly inventive patterns and clever use of color translated into strong contemporary collections of interior decor, clothing and accessories. In the years that followed, it has flourished in the boundary between art and design.
Now, Marimekko brings its striking point of view to Boston's vibrant Newbury Street with a 3200 square foot, experience-rich shop just moments away from where the brand first entered the US market decades ago. The new environment will feature the entire range of Marimekko products, from signature fashions to home furnishings, and showcase new products each season.
The new shop is located in the heart of the city at 140 Newbury Street in a circa 1880's brownstone renovated by architect Darwin Earl Gardner in the late 1920's. Inspired by Florentine architecture, he marked the building's facade with decorative elements such as the fleur de lis over the entrance. Marimekko will occupy the entire retail area on first floor, lower level and mezzanine with a goal of maintaining the integrity of the building and neighborhood while elevating its mood.
"The Newbury Street shopping area is an ideal match for Marimekko. This excellent location will support our strategy of building Marimekko's profile and strengthening the brand image," states Lynn Shanahan, President, Marimekko North America. "We are so pleased with the support that we have received thus far in the US, and are greatly looking forward to bringing a richer Marimekko experience to our valued customers."
The opening celebration takes place on Tuesday, August 7th and will be highlighted with Marimekko designer Aino-Maija Metsola talking about Marimekko's Art of Printmaking from 12:00pm – 1:00pm on August 8 when the store opens to the public. All are welcome to attend.
