Cosmetics retailer Sephora Inc. must pay $1.2 million in penalities to California for failing to comply with the state's consumer privacy laws.
Sephora failed to disclose to consumers that it was collecting and selling their personal information and failed to process opt-out requests made by individuals through software or a web browser tool, said Attorney General Rob Bonta.
This is the first enforcement action of the California Consumer Protection Act, putting companies on notice that they must "protect consumer data, honor their privacy rights," Mr. Bonta said. "It's really quite simple."
Sephora, after being notified by Mr. Bonta's office of CCPA violations, didn't make corrections within the 30-day cure period allowed by the law, he said.
