ScottishPower, a subsidiary of Spanish utilities giant Iberdrola SA, is planning to build a green hydrogen plant in Britain's busiest container port, in a move aimed at helping replace polluting fuels in powering trains, trucks and ships.
The Glasgow-based energy company said Tuesday that it has teamed up with port-operator group Hutchison Ports to explore the development and construction of a 100-megawatt green hydrogen production facility at the port of Felixstowe in Suffolk, England.
ScottishPower said the proposed plant would produce green hydrogen for onshore purposes, such as road, rail and industrial use. It would also offer the opportunity to create derivative products of the fuel such as green ammonia or e-methanol, it said.
In Europe, the case for hydrogen--including its green version made with renewable electricity--is gaining momentum amid surging energy prices and concerns about commodity supplies after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
"This strategically important project could potentially create a clean fuels hub that could unlock nationally significant decarbonisation for the region, as well as playing a role in international markets," said Barry Carruthers, Hydrogen Director at ScottishPower.
The company said that the project could deliver up to 40 metric tons of the low-carbon fuel per day, or enough to power 1300 hydrogen trucks.
