MISSISSAUGA, ON, May 24, 2011 /CNW/ --
Ohio University reports a 92% reduction in microwave cooking related
fire runs/nuisance calls
MISSISSAUGA, ON, May 24, 2011 /CNW/ - Pioneering Technology Corp. of
Mississauga, Ontario (TSXV: PTE), ("Pioneering") announced today that
Ohio University recently reported a 92% reduction in fire department
responses, versus the same period last year, after installing 4,479
Safe-T-sensors on microwave ovens in residential housing across campus.
A study completed by Ohio University's Environmental Health and Safety
(EHS) department and the Athens Ohio Fire Department (AFD) found that
the majority of the fire department's nuisance alarms on campus were
caused by burnt food in microwave ovens. It was estimated that there
was a total cost of over $2,000 per run the AFD made to campus.
More importantly, is the resulting apathy towards a potentially
life-threatening situation. "When I hear the alarm go off, I tend to
shrug it off or sigh because it's almost never real," said an Ohio
University sophomore student.
The Safe-T-sensor, developed by Pioneering is the only technology of its
kind that helps mitigate the fires and false alarms/nuisance calls
attributed to the use of microwave ovens on campus. The Safe-T-sensor
is a patent pending technology designed to detect burning conditions in
microwave ovens interrupting the power to the microwave before it
causes a fire or triggers the building fire alarm resulting in a
building evacuation.
"The investment in these sensors has reduced fire runs, response
hazards, late night residence evacuations, interruption in study time
and the cost of fire equipment operation, campus police and personnel
required to investigate," said Brent Auker - Fire Protection Engineer,
Ohio University. "Ohio University plans to continue its efforts and
ongoing education to new students each year to stress the importance of
these devices and of the awareness of fire safety."
Pioneering CEO Kevin Callahan said, "We are pleased with the success
this product is achieving at Ohio University and other schools around
the country in an effort to help make the campus environment a safer
place for all. This unique product has proven itself a winner
especially in those environments where building evacuations result in
dangerous situations or affect productivity."
