NaiKun Wind Energy Group Inc. (TSX VENTURE:NKW) - As more than 1 billion people around the world participate in Earth Day activities this year, British Columbians have an opportunity to reflect on their province's potential to reduce harmful emissions that contribute to global warming. British Columbia's abundance of clean, renewable energy sources, including projects like the one being developed by NaiKun Wind, can play a vital role in combatting climate change. NaiKun Wind Energy Group Inc. is developing Canada's first offshore wind energy project, to be built in Hecate Strait between Haida Gwaii and Prince Rupert. "Earth Day is one way to renew our individual and collective commitment to improving the environment," said Paul Taylor, NaiKun Wind's President and CEO. "Our project is an example of how we can meet the ever-growing demand for electricity and simultaneously reduce our impact on the environment." This year marks the 40th celebration of Earth Day, and the initiative is widely recognized as a powerful catalyst for individual and local activities around the world. Here in Canada, nearly every school child participates in an Earth Day activity. NaiKun Wind's 396MW energy project will harness the power of the strong winds in Hecate Strait using 110 turbines installed several kilometres off the eastern shore of Haida Gwaii (formerly the Queen Charlotte Islands). Wind energy is one of the cleanest, most abundant and cost-effective resources that can be used to generate power. "The NaiKun Wind project will produce enough clean, renewable power to meet the electricity needs of 130,000 B.C. homes," said Taylor. "The project will also help the province meet its targets for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions as well as the goal of electricity self-sufficiency." In addition to creating a wide variety of local jobs, the project will support economic development on Haida Gwaii and eliminate the islands' reliance on diesel generators for electricity, thus displacing 26,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions on the islands each year. NaiKun Wind Energy Group Inc. is a British Columbia-based renewable energy company with offices in Vancouver, Masset and Skidegate. The company's primary focus is the development of a 396MW offshore wind energy project which will generate enough energy to provide electricity to 130,000 B.C. homes and play a significant role in combating climate change. NaiKun Wind is committed to working in partnership with First Nations and collaboratively with stakeholder groups and local communities in the development of its project.
