North American rail traffic rose 10.6% last week as gains in the U.S. and Canada more than offset a decline in Mexico, data from the Association of American Railroads showed.
Carload volume rose 11.3% for the week ended June 19 on 12 reporting U.S., Canadian and Mexican railroads, while intermodal traffic rose 10%, the trade group said Wednesday.
In the week ended June 12, North American rail traffic rose 15.3%. For the first 24 weeks of the year, North American rail traffic is up 12.1%.
The AAR said U.S. rail traffic rose 12.5% last week, with carloads up 15.1% and the volume of intermodal containers and trailers up 10.4%. U.S. rail traffic is up 13.7% for the first 24 weeks of the year.
Canadian rail traffic rose 8.6% last week amid a 5.9% rise in carloads and an 11.7% increase in intermodal units jumped 14.3%. Canadian rail traffic is up 9% for the first 24 weeks of the year.
Mexican rail traffic fell 4.3% last week, with carloads down 5.2% and intermodal units down 2.9%. Mexican rail traffic is up 4.3% for the year to date, the AAR said.
