North American Rail Traffic Fell 2.7% in Week Ended Sept. 11

North American rail traffic fell 2.7% last week, marking a fourth straight weekly decline, as supply-chain issues continue to weigh on volumes, data from the Association of American Railroads showed.

Carload volume rose 2.4% for the week ended Sept. 11 on a dozen reporting U.S., Canadian and Mexican railroads, while intermodal traffic fell 7.3%, the trade group said Wednesday.

In the week ended Sept. 4, North American rail traffic fell 3.5%. For the first 36 weeks of the year, North American rail traffic is up 8.9%, compared with a year-to-date gain of 9.2% reported a week earlier.

The AAR said U.S. rail traffic fell 1.3% last week, as a 6% decline in the volume of intermodal containers and trailers more than offset a 4.5% rise in carloads. U.S. rail traffic is up 10% for the first 36 weeks of the year.

Canadian rail traffic slid 8.3% last week amid a 5.8% decline in carloads and an 11.1% drop in intermodal units. Canadian rail traffic is up 5.9% for the first 36 weeks of the year.

Mexican rail traffic rose 1.6% last week, as a 13.5% jump in carloads more than offset an 11.2% drop in intermodal units. Mexican rail traffic is up 6% for the year to date, the AAR said.
