Amtrak Gets CP Rail Support For Service Expansion in U.S.

The National Railroad Passenger Corporation, which operates as Amtrak, said Thursday that Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd. will continue to act as a host railroad and cooperate with the company to implement its strategic goals to expand intercity passenger rail service in North America.

The passenger railroad service, which provides inter-city rail service in Canada and the U.S., said that CP will support Amtrak to increase the frequency of some of its services as well as establish new lines across North America.

The agreement solidifies Amtrak's support for the proposed combination between CP Rail and KCS railways, which was completed in mid-December for an enterprise value of US$31 billion.

Amtrak said that, together with CP, they will file their agreement as part of the docket in the Canadian Pacific-Kansas City Southern proceeding at the U.S. Surface Transportation Board.

"We welcome CP's commitment to our efforts with states and others to expand Amtrak service and are pleased to have reached an agreement formalizing CP's support of Amtrak expansion in the Midwest and the South," Amtrak President Stephen Gardner said.
