Volkswagen AG (VOW.XE) has developed a gearbox that it says will help reduce carbon dioxide emissions as European automakers face looming regulations.
The MQ281 manual gearbox will cut CO2 emissions by up to five grams per kilometer and will be fitted to almost all vehicle types within the Volkswagen Group, the German automaker said Monday. The new Passat is the first vehicle to feature the gearbox.
European automakers are struggling to slash the CO2 emissions of their cars to meet the European Union's upcoming targets, which were approved last year. By 2021, automakers need to manufacture new cars with a fleet-wide average of 95 grams of CO2 per kilometer if they wish to avoid fines. VW's new cars in Europe averaged 123 grams of CO2 per kilometer last year, which is 26% below the target, according to the company's recent sustainability report.
