Munich prosecutors have filed charges against Rupert Stadler, the former chief executive of Audi AG (NSU.XE), in connection with the diesel scandal at parent company Volkswagen AG (VOW.XE).
Mr. Stadler and three other people have been charged with fraud, falsifying certification, and illegal advertising, the prosecutors' office said on Wednesday.
Auto maker Volkswagen and its Audi unit have been embroiled in a scandal since September 2015, when the German company was accused by U.S. authorities of installing software in vehicles that allowed them to sidestep emissions tests. Volkswagen admitted to outfitting nearly 11 million vehicles world-wide with the software.
Mr. Stadler is accused of having been aware of the manipulation since the end of September 2015 at the latest, but of nevertheless allowing the sale of the affected vehicles to continue, the prosecutor said.
Mr. Stadler has previously denied any knowledge of the manipulation. His lawyers couldn't immediately be reached for comment.
