WASHINGTON, June 7 /PRNewswire/ --
WHAT: Save the Date ... Freddie Mac's Hoops for the Homeless(R) is back
in a big way this year as Magic Johnson, Washington Wizards
All-Star Gilbert Arenas, and others help Freddie Mac fight family
homelessness in the DC area. Freddie Mac's annual celebrity
basketball tournament takes place on June 9 at the Verizon Center
in Washington, DC and will benefit six local nonprofits: Hannah
House and So Others Might Eat (SOME) in DC; United Communities
Against Poverty (UCAP) and Community Ministry of Montgomery
County in MD; and Reston Interfaith and Securing Emergency
Resources Through Volunteer Service (SERVE) in VA. Last year,
this event raised $900,000 to help reduce family homelessness and
drew 10,000 fans.
WHY: According to a study conducted last year, more than 12,000
individuals are homeless in the DC area -- nearly half of which
are families. Also, children make up a quarter of the local
homeless population.
WHO: Celebrities, professional athletes and media personalities --
including basketball legend Magic Johnson, Washington Wizards
All-Star Gilbert Arenas, and former Washington Redskin Ken
Harvey -- will all help slam-dunk family homelessness in the DC
region. In addition, each shelter has a "client" team
participating to further raise awareness about the plight of
homeless families.
