DETROIT, Sept. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- DTE Energy has achieved an early milestone in its GreenCurrents program, by signing up its 4000th customer for the voluntary renewable energy plan. Introduced in April, GreenCurrents gives DTE Energy's Detroit Edison electric customers the option of "greening up" their power with renewable energy created from the wind, biomass and other environmentally friendly sources. "We are thrilled that our customers are embracing the GreenCurrents program," said Trevor Lauer, vice president of marketing for DTE Energy. "Michigan is a very environmentally-sensitive state, and in just a few short months, 4000 of our customers have stepped forward to help shape the future of sustainable energy in Michigan." Commissioner Monica Martinez of the Michigan Public Service Commission said the groundswell of support for the GreenCurrents program demonstrates the momentum that renewable energy has in Michigan. "Thousands of Detroit Edison customers are proving that renewable energy is both affordable and advantageous," Martinez said. "The result will be a cleaner Michigan less reliant on fossil fuels, and that bodes well for our future." Lori Bird, senior analyst with the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory, said programs like GreenCurrents play an important role in diversifying the nation's energy supply and encouraging the development of new renewable energy projects. "DTE Energy, through its GreenCurrents program, is doing a great job of promoting renewable energy in Michigan," Bird said. "That's good for the environment and good for the economy - and we congratulate them on their success." Under the GreenCurrents program, DTE Energy's Detroit Edison electric customers can select a renewable energy option that best fits their budget. For as little as $2.50 extra a month, residential customers can purchase a block of renewable energy that's equal to 15-20 percent of a typical home's monthly electric usage. Customers also can choose to match 100 percent of their home's electricity consumption with renewable resources by paying an extra $10 to $15 per month for a typical household. Business customers can purchase 1,000 kilowatt hours of green energy for an extra $20 a month - or match all of their electricity usage with renewable energy for an additional cost of two cents per kilowatt hour. Additional information on the GreenCurrents program is available at http://www.greencurrents.com/, or by calling (866) 207-6955.
