ANN ARBOR, Mich., April 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Con-way Freight, a subsidiary of Con-way Inc. (NYSE:CNW) today announced that Neil Smith has been promoted to the position of director, quality assurance for its less-than-truckload (LTL) carrier Con-way Freight-Central based in Ann Arbor, Mich. (Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20060421/DEF028 ) Smith will have management responsibilities for the implementation of all quality procedures, programs and new initiatives. This will include on-time service, reduced claims, invoicing accuracy, quality audits and individual service center procedural compliance to quality programs. He will also have oversight responsibility for ISO 9001 and 14000 and C-TPAT compliance. "At Con-way we define quality performance as superior execution not only in how well we physically move freight but also in how well our administrative services perform. These two functions directly impact the customer relationship. Neil's leadership skills and experience will keep us even more focused on superior execution in these critical areas," said David L. Miller, president of Con-way Freight-Central. Smith replaces Craig Jackson who was named vice president of sales for the company. Smith will report to Miller. A 20-year transportation veteran, Smith began his career with Con-way in 1996 as a service center manager in Hayward, Calif. for Con-Way Western Express. In October 1999 he was named service center manager for the Tacoma, Wash. facility. In October of 2000, he was promoted to region manager for the Northern Region and was based in Seattle, Wash. He is a 1982 graduate of Elmira College where he earned a bachelor's degree in business administration. He will work out of the Con-way Freight-Central general offices in Ann Arbor.
