German automaker BMW will shut its Spartanburg, S.C., plant on Sunday, idling the plant's 11,000 workers amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The company intends to continue paying workers, a spokesman said. The plant will be closed at least until April 12. No decision has been made on layoffs, the spokesman added.
Shelter-in-place orders in other states related to the crisis have disrupted parts supplies, requiring the move sooner than anticipated, the spokesman said. South Carolina hasn't put in place an order that would prevent work at the factory.
"Because of the decline in demand for our vehicles, BMW Manufacturing is adjusting its production volume, shift models and workforce structure to reflect the changing market," spokesman Phil DiIanni said in an email.
